I know, even Gonzo of all studios used 2D mechs when they animated the first season. Given how cheaply Anime is made, I never understand why they invest so much money into CGI cars and mechs.

It's probably because it's cheaper to animate all the mecha and cars in CG than 2D f-b-f. Once you model and rig them, all movements, camera movements and corrections are basically "free"

From what I’ve read, it takes “a very particular set of skills” to animate mecha. Like they don’t have enough animators who are either familiar with mechanical animation or have the time to devote to a particular project. So instead of being placed in a bind where mecha animators are a limited quantity, they opt for CG animation or a mix of it and 2d.

Cue Buzz Lightyear meme: "CGI... CGI everywhere."

At least it doesn't look to be too jarring. For some reason, the cel-shaded look that the robots have allow them to fit more seamlessly into the world as opposed to the more gritty, detailed Macross Valks. Still, the framerate is way too high and the lack of any form of bending or warping will make for very stilted action...

That is completely true(at least as far as I know), but many shows have gotten past that by cutting corners; close ups, floating static images, that cut where they are moving towards the camera, but it is just a single image with some effects to make it look like it is moving etc. This cut for example was done with only 3 key-frames: https://twitter.com/shindosha/status/935442470871040000

I'm impressed how on model it looks, they have resisted the temptation to alter the mecha or character looks to modern visual styles, for example they still all having the dated giant eyes but I prefer it that way, modern anime style characters lack visual distinction.

I gotta say, those CGI cars didn't look good at all. The rest was fine. I'll watch it for sure.
