This show was great! 6 months ago... This show was already a favorite and would have been the absolute most perfect show for weekly reviews. Oh well, Netflix screws that dream.
Either way would recommend watching if you haven't, it's real good. |

Speaking of performances, the English dub is also very, VERY impressive. The actors were told to go nuts and that's absolutely what they did, and I loved it. Great casting, strong performances, good script. Easily the strongest "Netflix Original" dub yet. I'd go so far as to say it's one of the best dubs Bang Zoom has ever produced. If you don't mind dubs, seriously check it out.

It seems rare to see an anime that is this blatantly, textually anti-capitalism. Can't think of any others quite like this.

This is one of the shows I thought it's going to do really well on disc sales considering the manga sales, but the disc numbers sucked. At least it's still getting a S2. I get the anime is supposed to "advertise the manga", but it would be cool to see Kakegurui branch out to be a solid franchise. Like, I don't know, a Danganronpa-like video game or something.
I was worried what kind of role Ryota would play since he could have easily be the "male MC" that softens Yumeko's badassery and become better than her, but thank god that's not the case so far! Now hopefully they don't make him a love interest or anything else more than a surrogate.
I need to do a shout out towards Sarah Williams as Midari which I never heard that kind of performance out of her especially if you only know her voice as Sayaka from Madoka Magica or Karin from Yuki Yuuna. The same for a lot of the female cast as well. |

More like, men usually do this thing very differently and in a way that doesn't actually represent real queer women.

Do you deliberately seek the worst possible interpretation of the viewpoints in this column? I honestly don't get the sense that you're really trying to understand why people feel the way they do about different anime, instead of just trying to stoke a sense of outrage on behalf of a demographic that's already extremely well-catered-to. As for the subject matter of the column itself, I read some of the manga a while back... I think I prefer Kaiji. |

^^I personally don’t think it would be completely fair to compare this series directly with Kaiji (even if it wasn’t intentional) as they both do their own things pretty differently from each other, but eh.
Anyway, I haven’t binged a series so quickly in a good while since this show was finally released by Netflix. Would have been much more preferable if they had simulcasted, but what’s done is done. So much fun with this series and I was never once bored with the matches and the interesting characters. Very much looking forward to season 2.

I wasn't even really looking forward to this that much last year, so when Netflix picked it up I just thought "meh". Having said that, I got through the whole series in about two days, which is very rare for me as I am not a binge watcher at all. I had an absolute blast with this series and cannot wait for S2. It actually reminded me of a lot of these old gambling manga I used to love reading, like Liar Game or Gamble Fish. I used to really be big into those gambling type stories but kind of fell away from that in recent years. It was nice to have that love rekindled with Kakegurui.
My big complaint actually has nothing to do with the show itself and instead, Netflix's woefully inconsistent and annoying name translations. It seemed like they couldn't decide whether to leave last name's as they were or translate them as the character's first name (which I already don't like as a translation choice, but it was made even worse by Netflix jumping back and forth). Very annoying, but fortunately did not put too much of a damper on the series. |

I remember checking out the manga when the anime was first announced to see what it was going to be like and my first thought was "Oh, the anitwitter folks I follow are going to like this.".
Never really thought a story with a giant metaphor about the crushing nature of capitalism can be so propulsively positive and upbeat. Yumeko is also a pretty interesting play on expectations. She gets introduced as an airheaded ditzy ingenue. Then you quickly realize that she's the smartest person in the room and a genius manipulator on par with Lelouch and Kira. And then you realize she's actually an idealistic naive shonen hero like Gon, Deku and Naruto who makes friends and saves the people she defeats. |

No, they're saying that if they had simply changed the gender of the people this barb was aimed at, it would be considered unacceptable, and thus the original statement aimed at men was unacceptable. And they're pretty much right. There's a lot of bashing on straight dudes in these weekly columns. It doesn't add anything of value to the column, while simply detracting from it. The info that's actually useful to me as a potential viewer in this column is diluted by this unnecessary bigotry. |
