Setting aside that the rules, as written, would apply to the bulk of anime out there, there's also a lot of famous Western work that would fall into the mix as well.

Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Twilight, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lolita, etc.

The counter-argument is that they're obviously not going to shut down the subreddits of huge fandoms as that would drive people away from the site. At that point then, that leaves the rules as being vague for the purpose of giving them an excuse to shut down whatever they like when they feel like it. Hopefully they reverse the change or, preferably, make it so they're only trying to police stuff that actually poses a risk.

I don't use Reddit but this kind of feels like being overly broad of a policy without anything substantial to stop actual children from being hurt. While also making it hard to report actual cases of abuse and sexual exploitation. It's really easy to get overly emotional about this sort of issue and end up in a ideological ditch on either the side of freedom of expression versus societal harm.

If someone want's something bad enough they will find a way to get and while Reddit has a right to dictate what content is and is not allowed on it's platform. It really only stops it on that platform. How this will effect freedom of expression in the future only time will tell.

Ultimately no matter how nauseating or offensive I find a piece of media my personal disgust does not trump someone's right to consume it provided there are no actual victims in said media. That being said decisions like this could to a "gate keeper" mentality on social media platforms.

Reddit is normie central, I'm more surprised it wasn't already banned given how ban happy they are for wrongthink. Plus their layout is horrendous and looks more like the Windows Device Manager UI than a discussion forum. There's plenty of better sites out there for discussion about that stuff.

the first two comments I think say most of what needs to be said, so I applaud them.

Also there's no way to enforce this, but will become a backdoor. A well behaved sub that sometimes breaks this rule will be ignored. But the moment someone points out their politics this will just become a trigger to end them.

Its a 'sounds nice' policy that doesn't actually do much. Soon enough it'll be weaponized, be it by trolls or mods.

Well they can make any rules they want since they own the website but at the rate it is changing Reddit will be the most politically correct forum on the internet in another 5 years. It is like a strip club changing into a church. I am skeptical that it will improve their web traffic but I am interested to see the Twitter reactions to this news.

Reddit once again changing rules no one was calling to be changed just to appeal to public and sponsors who don't even use, or know, the site.

The only reason people still stick with Reddit is because it's the only link/news/etc aggregator that is known, popular and works. They keep trying to make it more "Social Media" and Facebook like and they're ruining the good thing they have.

I feel like within 5 years someone is going to make a site taht's basically Reddit 2.0 and that site will suffer big time for it, mostly because they don't just stay out of their own way.

I guess it won't be long for /r/anime and other anime ingrained subs will either be banned or potential future discussion on future shows severely hampered because of this rule change, especially when the content doesn't even need to be suggestive.

Reddit's old rules already got abused quite regularly. Several subreddits geared towards pettanko hentai tried to play it safe by having heavy restrictions on loli content. The end result would be trolls probing them with toddlercon to see if the mods were active, flooding the subreddit if their posts were surviving, followed by reporting the subreddit to the admins for "illegal content".

What Reddit cares about most is "Would leaving this subreddit up give us negative press and scare away advertisers?", as noted by their tendency to only react once media scrutiny heads their way.

The line "in some cases include depictions of minors that are fully clothed and not engaged in overtly sexual acts" literally means they can ban anything with under-18 humans in it. (Heck, technically it doesn't even say humans.) Sure, they probably won't go that far, and they probably won't ban all the anime subreddits. But they could, without even going to the trouble of breaking their own rules, and any part of the site that involves underage people or characters now has to be on guard at all times. Apparently they banned quite a few places that were mentioned in the discussion thread.

Still, this isn't really an issue with Reddit; it's more due to American paranoia about sexual predators, and our simultaneous denial of the amount of weird sexualization we have in mainstream culture. Women and girls of any age are encouraged to aim for a particular standardized attractive appearance, but that's not considered creepy, for some reason.

Just like others have said, this appears to just be a PR move. If they were to follow these rules then /r/anime would cease to exist altogether because anime features "depictions of minors that are fully clothed and not engaged in overtly sexual acts". Same with every Disney Channel show and the like, but it's whatever. Reddit is obviously struggling real bad for money and are pushing for advertisers. They just want to look good and will push actual users away for it. Welcome to America these days.

I have no idea how they're going to enforce this. The hentai subreddit has set their own rules:

"Our rules dictate that the character must be stated, in the parody material itself, that the character is underage. Either by explicit text, context (Ie: shown attending middle school, wearing elementary school clothes, etc), or general demeanor. Past that, it's just a smell test so to speak."

But if say, someone reported a Blend S piece that's on the front of the subreddit right now because the character is in high school, there's a 99% chance Reddit's admins would overrule /r/hentai's rules and take it down.

Given how they are making it unintuitive to report these cases and how they simply can't handle what's 50% of anime porn that gets posted on the site unless they trained the best AIs in the world, my guess is that this is simply a "it's in our rules, any problem you have with this is on the user that posted it, not us, the hosts" situation.
They also likely aren't banning entire subreddits for this so likely not gonna do much except a couple big bots and users getting banned here and there.

Advertisers are literally the worst thing to happen to media creation. They literally are the kiss of death to any site that has entertainment.

Remind me agin how such a rule stops real pedophilia?? The answer is,it doesn’t ,its just a stunt to appease advertisers. It’s just sad and pathetic.

And besides, anyone who cant tell the difference between reality and fiction are already lost anyways. I can probably guess that I’m preaching to the choir, and everybody is ver level headed about this.

So under these rules you probably couldn't post anything from "Made in Abyss." But not just that. Disney's Snow White is 14 while Prince Charming certainly seems to be 18 or older. Sleeping Beauty is 16 and I believe Ariel is, too. In fact, most Disney princesses are under 18 while their men folk mostly seem to be 18 or over. And what about Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf? Some versions of the tale have a clear sexual subtext. In fact, many classic fairy tales have a sexual subtext.

And what about historical facts? Just to take one example, when Capt. Clark returned from the Lewis & Clark expedition he married a girl well under 18 when he was already over 30. Is Reddit going to ban any discussion of William Clark's marriage?
