While I think petitions like this are meaningless 'cause they rarely achieve their goal of changing/improving what's wrong with something, I gotta say I can't help to side with this one. I was looking forward to Houshin Engi being a cozy, nostalgic return that once and for all told the whole manga storyline and instead I was shocked to find a barely coherent series. Now, don't get me wrong: I did expect the bad production values in animation & visuals overall...but I did not expect this trainwreck. It's one thing to be mature and experienced enough to not expect a 1:1 adaption of the original source material but this is in a whole new level of incompetence.

What's make this all the more surprising is that probably very few people were demanding this remake: fans of the original manga or series have mostly moved on a long time ago. So you'd think that if they wanted to bring the story to a new audience it's because they hired a very motivated studio to perform a great job....

Unfortunately, I think the much more likely scenario is that it will finish out its allotted episodes, and then just fade away as the production committee does nothing else with it.

I think this new adaptation actually has pretty decent visuals and animation quality, but it really needed a higher episode count. The first 5 episodes rushed through the first five manga volumes, with some bizarre flash-forward prologues and changes to the ordering of events, while episode 6 gobsmacked me by outright skipping most of the contents of volumes 6-12, with episode 7 already set to cover the Great Sennin War arc that happens in volume 13.

My guess is that the staff wanted to spend as few episodes as possible on material that had already been covered (albeit with significant changes) by the previous adaptation, but the next 17 episodes will still have to be rushed as hell in order to cover almost 11 volumes' worth of chapters. Houshin Engi deserves better, and it's a shame that the production committee couldn't raise enough money for a yearlong run at least.

I know that the adaptation is poorly received, but how more petty can you get?

"Oooh I dont like the way they re-adapted my old favourite anime, time to set up a petition"

Someone needs to give this girl a slap back into reality and realise that just because manga gets a reboot doesn't exaclty mean it will be any better .-.

I haven't seen it, is it Berserk bad, where it is very inferior to the other adaptations or Hunter X Hunter bad, where it is not the same as the last adaptation?

As much as I agree with the criticism for the new anime, it's a pipe dream to believe the production committee will simply fork over money to remake an anime that's already airing. Money doesn't grow on trees, and criticism by a group of vocal fans isn't suddenly going to make funds appear. If people really want a series done their way, they either have to provide the funds themselves (you either have to be rich already or have won a jackpot) or somehow crowdfund an anime with an agreed upon script, and neither of those are easy for any property to achieve, let alone one that's more than a decade old.

I only watched the first episode but it was such a confusing mess that I can understand why someone would make a petition about the show. It won't do any good though since the story is so rushed that it looks like this adaptation was only made for people who are already fans of the manga.

That probably explains why I've come out of each episode with the distinct impression that I'm missing something.

I would say neither. I never watched the old Houshing Engi anime, but I could tell there was a huge problem with this remake: it's simply incomprehensible!
We don't get to properly know the characters, the plot seems pretty contrived...
It's an anime I really wanted to like, but now I just want to read the manga (maybe that was the studio's secret plan! Smile )

Now I'm kinda scared to see any old anime remakes announced (I wanted to see new versions of Rurouni Kenshin, YuYu Hakushu, 3x3 Eyes), except for Captain Tsubasa because I have faith in David Production.

The former in that it's a genuinely bad adaptation (though at least Berserk's story was comprehensible, animation problems aside) As others in the thread have said, it rushes through storylines, characters have been excised, and just bizarre story telling choices. They're trying to adapt a 23 volume series into about as many episodes and that's just not gonna fly. It's actually kind of fascinating how badly they've botched this. You'd think they would just do two seasons since it's been so long since the original adaptation, but apparently they decided to just cram everything in ASAP. It's just weird.

It takes fewer than 1500 signatures to get ANN to cover some random person's petition? I'll have to keep that in mind.

IMO what actually happened was that the committee had planned to adapt the entirety of the manga in proper, but only managed to secure around half the funding. This pushed them to take drastic measures by rewriting the plot.

I didn't watch the original, but I read the manga a long, long time ago. I've forgot most of the details, but I still remember the gist of what's going on. Maybe that's why I can still sorta follow the story of this new anime, but I get how casual watchers end up confused.

Houshin Engi was a really loved work when it was serialized that didn't get properly animated. I sorta understand the fan's sentiments.

Don't even recall Berserk 2016/2017 getting this reaction of hate from people, yeah people hated it but no weird petitions to stop things. I actually need to get around to watching the original show which I bought.

The harsh reality of making such petitions is, while you have the right to do it, to not expect to the production committee/staff will actually respond. If the staff was doing a crowd-funding project for this version to be made, that is where they are more likely to respond to some of the criticism.
