Fate/Grand Order's main appeal isn't really its story, which is a pretty basic video game fetch quest

For Fuyuki and perhaps Orleans, i'll agree, but after that? Nah.

[EDIT: I'm guessing that you actually intended to use quote tags instead of spoiler tags, so that has been fixed. - Key]

Other than the waifus, the story is definitely the main appeal. Though Rome and especially London are definitely weak, America was pretty awesome.

First Order is definitely better off watched as a stream/rental to gauge if you're interested in picking up the game.

Kinda hard to take a review seriously when the reviewer is clearly not interested in the source material...

Oh for crying out loud, people

You're literally having to rip sentences apart to find something to get mad about. The reviewer said other parts of the story are perfectly interesting, but the first tutorial level isn't that great. And that's the only part of the story this movie adapts.

It's difficult to justify buying the BD when I can just watch it on Crunchyroll, but in terms of getting people hyped for FGO proper First Order does a good job. The music is a huge part of that, whether it's the pulse-spiking remix of Emergency or the foreboding Apotheosis, but getting to see Chaldea is a treat as well. Finally, there are the little touches added for game players, such as the spoiler[split-second previews of the Time Temple and Solomon reaching for the Grail] as well as the navigators appearing near the end.

I had fun with First Order. Next Order when?

First rule of 'Fate/club' don't diss the franchise or review it's content unbiasedly.
Second rule of 'Fate/club' don't mention AoA's extortionate pricing model. Wink

Unfortunately this will always be the nature of the fandom beast, constructive criticism has no place in a review especially when it comes to discussing someone else's favourite animu. Be overly harsh, be too praising or just give an honest opinion it won't matter, someone somewhere will find something to be unhappy about.

For my two cents worth FGO: FO is enjoyable for what it is but without a proper follow-up will always feel completely redundant. It's the sort of OVA you can watch, like and then forget about forever.

As a Fate fan who still hasn't played the Grand Order game, I think this special is definitely underappreciated. It's true that it's basically a commercial lead-in for the game, especially with its frustrating open-ended conclusion. But I still got hooked to the story being told, I thought the characters proved charming in their own right, it was refreshing to see Lancer/Caster truly shine in a way he was never totally able to in the other Fate stories, and the animation was just fine. You're right it's not fair to compare it to UFOtable's production, but it seems to hold truer for me. Whenever the Grand Order game is ever finished, I wonder if they'll ever animate an ending special to the story.

though they could have easily have put this OVA right alongside with the apocrypha series and then what?

its not that its a bad thing. its basically the MO for the MCs for the fate franchise and for this guy, he's basically a combination of what seig from apocrypha and the fate/avalon route version of shiro would be like.

It's hard to justify spending a lot of money on a glorified demo to a game that you can already play for free in another medium

which have been one of my biggest gripes for some light novel adaptations where they make the ending so clearly obvious to people that to want to know more, get the source materials. and this OVA is by far no exception to that "get the source materials, kids!" type of rule.

and its starting to make me understand why ufotable did what they did with those two berseria eps they plastered in season one of tales of zestiria the X for if they make them seperate ova's , no one outside of fans of the game would give it a second thought. at least this ova didn't get the berseria treatment and have it plastered in one of apocrypha's episodes.

Technically, the first Grand Order is over. It ended in late 2016/early 2017 (if I recall right), so they could very well make an anime adaptating that arc. Then there was the Epic of Remnant and now the game is entering its second major storyline with Cosmos of Lostbelt. All that to say, they could make a Grand Order anime or OVA series if they wanted.

As for the OVA itself. It's mostly good? I mean, I aggree it adapts a mostly boring part of the narrative and I have a few issues with some of the portrayals spoiler[namely Lancer harassing Mash] but values dissonance and all. Besides that, it's kinda well animated and all. Nothing to write home about.
