Is the Power Rangers franchise really worth 522 million dollars?

We know Hasbro thinks so. Guess I am really out of this sphere.

Haim wasn't going to let Hasbro swipe Power Rangers from him as cheaply as Viacom took the Ninja Turtles from Mirage.

Haim Saban is a very good businessman. He sold his share of the Fox Family Channel to Disney, which included Power Rangers in 2001 for 5 Billion Dollars. Then he bought Power Rangers back from Disney separately in 2010 for an undisclosed amount, which I can assume was cents on the dollar compared to what Haim sold it for to begin with. Now he is turning around and selling PRs again for 522 million. It currently airs in 150 countries so I'd say yeah it's worth the money. It's even more so since it includes the entire franchise. That includes television, films, video games, toys, merchandise rights.

He didn't specifically sell PR back then. It was just tied in with Fox Family Worldwide. He bought it back for less than $100 million. I've heard he bought it back for a lot less than that, in fact. So now he flips it for big money.

I'm still processing this deal and what it means not just for the future of the show and who's making it, but the comics, HyperForce, the Sentai DVDs, Power Morphicon and everything else.

Hopefully it doesn't affect them too much if at all. I've been really enjoying the comics, Shattered Grid has been very good so far, and I am "patiently" waiting for Shout Factory to get to Gokaiger.

Hasbro has to honor the contracts that are already in effect. So Bandai will remain the master toy licensee until next year regardless, and Mattel's Fisher-Price will keep putting out Imaginext figures until then, as well. I don't know the details of the Boom deal, the Shout deal and when those come up.

If I'm not mistaken, Shout still releases their Transformers titles on DVD so if that relationship is still going well then Hasbro should have no problems with this plus most of Shout's dealings is with Toei on that front (with masters and such) and Timeranger is still coming out in late July.

The question I would like to know is what does this mean for Lionsgate? The 2017 movie will probably stay with them since it was a co-production (like with Fox keeping the 1995 & Turbo films all this time) but what about their rights to Samurai-Dino Charge and what about Ninja Steel since there hasn't been any DVDs announced for that season.

Well, since Yo-kai Watch gets no love here in the States, Hasbro probably decided they needed some franchises that would at least make them more money domestically. Power Rangers definitely fits the bill.

I've been holding my shares rather shakily since the turbulent year. First the Star Wars toys weren't selling, then even worse Toys R Us went under. I'm glad they aren't just taking punches and still able to make acquisitions.

I'm still curious how they plan on producing their toys. It wouldn't be impossible for them to simply import Bandai Japan's toys, that's still a practice they do with some toy lines today. If they decide to use the same process they use when making Transformers then that would make Takara Tomy an integral part of the process as they do all of Hasbro's engineering based on their rough designs. Granted, most of the work is already done if they're doing what Bandai America did and simply making cheap imitations of the Japanese figures, but it still amuses me to think that Takara Tomy could be helping make figures (and money) off of their biggest rival's characters behind the scenes.

If you're referring to the quality of the show, I wouldn't expect miracles. Beast Morphers is already in the cast phases. Hasbro's direct input on the show is probably limited.

This is far more likely a reaction to the failure of Star Wars toys than Yo-Kai Watch. As far as Hasbro's concerned, YW has been buried outside of a few non-English pockets for a while now.

Does Hasbro import Bandai Japan toys? They haven't had a tonne of property overlap through the years, but with Yo-Kai Watch, they designed everything from the ground up for the west.

Oh, well then maybe not. I was under the impression they were importing at least some of the Yo-Kai Watch toys. Whatever Hasbro decides to do I'm sure their figures will be as good or better than Bandai Japan. I've heard someone compare BoJ's figure quality to Hasbro's recent Robots in Disguise Combiner Force figures (which are $30) so I'm not expecting anything too amazing, just cheaper and better made than the stuff from BoA.
