To the Moon’s one of my favorite games, so this is crazy to hear. Hopefully they do it good.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH *explodes*

I love this game! Very Happy I'm so excited to see this get made! I really hope it does well, and that it's brought over to the U.S. (it'll definitely go to Canada because that where To The Moon is from)

It does make me wonder about who will be involved in the production, though. The Chinese company whose funding the film were involved in bringing .your name to China, and with the budget about the same as that film...could Makoto Shinkai direct the film? I mean, it's unlikely. His films are all original ideas, and have specific themes that I'm not sure To The Moon really has. (Finding Paradise kinda does, but that's a sequel) But he has stated he was trying to come up with new ideas for his next film, and it wouldn't be that hard to imagine his own version of To The Moon.

Of course that's just speculation. I'm sure we'll have a better picture of what this movie will look like once we get more information.

The first thing I thought when I heard the news was "Oh my god, that's amazing!". The second thing was "Man, that time on an ANN talkback about the Angels of Death anime where I said To the Moon would never get an anime adaptation sure does look embarrassing now".

Seriously though, this is great. There have been English-language properties adapted for anime before, but I'm pretty sure those were all either children's books or franchises like Marvel, not indie games. Maybe the director is a fan.

I do wonder why China's involved, though. Maybe the producer is a fan too?

This pretty much confirms it for me, RPG maker games are going to be the new trend.

WAIT WAIT WAIT, I just read this part

"quoted as somewhere above the budget for the production of your name."

"first tier Japanese animation production companies"

... first tier japanese animation production.... also above the budget for "your name"........ wait... is this going to be the next "most beautiful anime ever"?!?!?!

Your Name had an average budget which was 450 million yen and I think it's public. Miyazaki's Kaze Tachinu for example had a budget of 3 billion.

Most of the visuals in To the Moon aren't especially complicated--it's an RPG Maker game, after all. The story and the music are what make it beautiful. As long as it has a good director, I think the budget of your name. is more than enough to do the job. (I'm actually surprised there's such a stark difference between your name. and The Wind Rises; I personally think your name. is the better-looking film.) Of course, "a good director" is the key phrase there...

Jesus, really? That's an amazing difference, I thought 450 million yen was a lot. Then again, now that I think about .your name, I do remember them taking some shortcuts here and there. It has beautiful scenery, but not a lot of action per se, except during the important scenes. Which is probably a good thing for To The Moon; it, too, has beautiful art, and not much action per se. (Finding Paradise has a bit more gameplay though, with all the minigames) Perfect budget for the type of story To The Moon has.

I really hope they attach a good director for this. I think someone who has worked on this type of story before and interpret the game mechanics for the animation. My personal pick right now is Makoto Shinkai, because of how many comparisons to .your name were made during the video. But if not, maybe Tatsuyuki Nagai or Tatsuya Ishihara, if the movie ends up being made at Kyoto Animation (for some reason). Ooh, maybe Mari Okada! She'd really be good for screenwriter too!
