You know what's funny I can't even remember if I finished watching this series when it was streaming (I'm guessing probably not). That goes to show how much I actually cared about what was going on. Laughing

From what I do remember though I would crown this show 'King of the lemons' without a second thought.

If you'd told me way back when i watched the first episode of this that it would be graded a B- for animation, i would never have believed it. Sounds very much like a "YMMV" situation.

As for a full Funi release for this, i can at least understand a bit, since it had "so bad it's good" infamy, but combined with other recent releases of stuff like XechS, i can't help but wonder if they're contractually forced to release certain shows.

I'm sure they are, at least in certain cases. It's not unheard of for licensing contracts to come with some strings attached beyond the license fee. I would also think that simuldub shows are more likely to at least get a minimal release in an effort to try to recover some of the costs.

For me the main problem with Hand Shakers was that it was bad but it wasn’t bad in the “So Bad, It’s Good” Way. It was just bad. The shock of how awful the animation and plot twists were dies down as you keep going, and by the finale you’re just super bored and confused.

Other terrible anime like First Love Monster are at least entertaining in how much of a dumpster fire they are. But Hand Shakers was just so painfully dull.

Part of me really wishes Funi gave it a gag dub treatment ala Ghost Stories.

If this was a Crunchyroll title, I wonder how they were able to include the OVA even though it’s not streaming anywhere.

Also, why Funimation decided to simuldub this one, but didn't for others that were the biggest of their seasons, like Place Further than the Universe and Megalobox confuses me to no end. Why couldn't they have just made it a sub-only release like Sentai does all the time for their stinkers?

What's the record for Funimation switching from a standard release to a S.A.V.E. release? I kinda doubt this will last a year.

Couldn't get through the first episode when this was simulcasting. Even without the visual problems, it's one of those uninspired "original" anime that leave me asking "you could have done anything, & this is all you could come up with?" The kind of thing that comes off like a rejected idea for a light novel that got animated because someone had the right connections & no problem wasting other peoples money.

Well it is on TV Tropes' So Bad It's Horrible page, so I'm not surprised you think that way.

Still, it must've taken some courage for Theron to give it that fair a shake.

I remember Hand Shakers, for no other reason than it was so underwhelming in just everything it did. Each time a new episode was released, I would look at it the title and go...'Now what the hell was this show about again? I just can't remember...' Each week I went through this ritual, and I think I got through like episode 4 or maybe 5, and said screw it. If my brain couldn't be bothered to even remember any part of the story or even who the main characters were week by week, it wasn't worth my time.

Thanks for the review Theron, but I don't think I can give this one another try.

A C+? Would it have to personally address the reviewer and say nasty things about their mother to get a D? I wish actual school graded this easy.

I loved reading reviews of this series week-by-week, and I tried to stomach the first episode since I was such a big fan of K. But for me, K was stylized as all hell but still managed half of an intriguing story and most importantly had characters I actually liked. Whereas Handshakers offers "stylized" visuals on acid, a boring premise, AND characters with all the appeal of wet cardboard.

I can appreciate hate-watching this show, since it crosses over into So Bad It's Good for some.

well there are people that DID liked the series. sure the series itself have flaws, but its anything but bad. especially when you have other titles at that time like scum's wish & NTR Trap which was TEN TIMES WORSE than the minor flaws that hand shakers did. though it does need something more other than an OVA to fix those flaws to make it a viable series.

The incestuous brother-sister duo gets more development, but involving incest in these kind of battle anime is a trend I could stand to see less of

not true. i mean selector infected/spread wixoss had kazuki & yuuzuki's relationship and it was done well enough that even non incest fans wanted those two to have their happily ever after (though i can't be a positive critic considering that i'm in the "for" crowd!")! reminded fans of other series like koi kaze & angel sanctuary on how relationships like those should be done!

was the storyline of the siblings in hand shakers FLAWED as hell? YES! i would definitely admit that! but at least their relationship wasn't as questionable as say, Oreimo's siblings (where its ending have more or less COMPLETELY DESTROYED the genre) or even SAO's Fairy Dance arc which was the after effects of oreimo's questionable methods!

Wonder why the OVA was not dubbed.

So this universally panned trainwreck gets a localized BD release almost instantly after initial airing, but we still don't have an English version of the Elfen Lied manga after 13 years. Let that sink in.
