So the general consensus around the internet is that the first episode of FLCL 2 is a pale imitation of all six episodes of what is considered to be by many, a masterpiece rubix cube. I'll be frank, no matter how many times I've watched the original version, no matter how many times I feel I get a better understanding of what the show is saying, I have always felt and still feel that the original FLCL had too much going on just to tell a story about how a 12 year-old interprets maturity and romance. Which is some ways was probably the point.

I really prefer to wait-and-see where the rest of the story goes with Progressive to give my full thoughts, but so far, the fact its first episode doesn't throw quite as many things in my face makes it easier for me to digest. And the fact it revolves on a slightly older character with more potentially-nuanced and complex thoughts going on makes the matter throwing whatever it wants to throw can help me feel more immersed.

The first episode definitely had some questions to explore, and I look forward to seeing how the rest of Progressive answers them. Outstanding dub performances too.

Really? from what I've seen, the general consensus on the internet was that the first ep was good but just not as good as the original. You have a small minority who found this first ep to make up for what the original lacked and the hardcore flcl fans who, like you said, found this first ep a pale imitation of the original. Not to worry, there are quite a few people who share your opinion of not finding the original a masterpiece or who are of the opinion that the show has aged a bit. My take on this first ep was more on the positive side, but i need to see more to have a well-informed opinion

I'm pretty happy with this. It's turning out pretty much how I predicted: not as great as FLCL, but still far superior than almost any other show on today.

It definitely needs more experimentation, though, so I can only hope that it follows the original's lead in telling very different kinds of stories in each episode.

Watching this last night on the heels of watching S1 very recently, I'm pretty happy with what I watched. Within the first 2 minutes, I was already confused and dumbfounded, which is basically what I expected to happen. And I can already tell it's starting to date itself much like how the original has dated itself. Which means to tell me when I go to watch this 15 years later, I'll be laughing and/or potentially cringing at the references. Something I'm not at all against. Anime hyper

Overall, looking forward to watching the rest of the episodes as they premier; going to be a fun 6-week journey to say the least!

Color me impressed. It felt like FLCL, but not just a rehash of what's been done before. They worked in the music of The Pillows to the scenes with smart editing, they gave us intriguing things to ponder going forward like Hidomi's family situation, the animation felt like a more modern but subdued take on the original's style, and there's a slight tinge of adolescent melancholy in the main character that isn't overdone but keeps the themes from the first season rolling. Adult Swim needs to do more anime, they actually pulled a team together to capture lightning in a bottle a second time and didn't screw it up. That's impressive.

Also, the ED gives us a hint of seeing adult Naota and Mamimi. Get hype!

Also, looking at the ED, here's a hypothesis about Haruko's role in this season even though she succeeded in freeing Atomysk in the first season (Her original goal):

At the end of the first season, Atomysk is released and Haruko goes to find him. From the looks of Progressive's ED, she eventually does find him and tries to absorb his power like Naota did. It doesn't go well for her though, and she ends up splitting into two people (Haruko and Jinyu). Whether Jinyu is a part of Haruko or simply a manifestation of Atomysk's power that Haruko couldn't control remains to be seen however.

Now it seems like Jinyu and Haruko are after each other in Progressive's story. Haruko wants the other half of Atomysk's power that Jinyu has, and Jinyu seems to be a more benevolent character that doesn't want to let Haruko have it all for her own selfish reasons.

The writing and dialog, especially the dub voice acting and Kari Walhgren's performances, were quite faithful to the original.

The animation, however, is bland and has none of the chaotic, experimental vibe of the original.

It's a good FLCL sequel if you close your eyes.

Hahaha it almost sounds like the animation is what makes flcl

I enjoyed it. It's a good start but like others have thought and said, it's not quite up to the greatness of the original. Probably because the original was just more impactful, especially with its experimentation. I will continue to keep an open mind though, and see how this plays out to the very end.

So am I correct that there is no version of this show with Japanese actors? There is only an English audio track? What are the Japanese watching? English with Japanese subtitles?

Not until November when the subbed version comes out, to align with the Japanese language release.

It wasn't awful but it made me laugh to see people think this was better than other shows currently airing. It's still to me felt more like a fanfic than a sequel and I doubt that will change but I'm hopeful. Also, again, The Pillows should be the pillows. You're disrespecting them by not stylizing the name in the official way. On that note, "LITTLE BUSTERS" should also be in all caps. Overall dub acting was superior to most, showing they put far more care into this than most dubs (understandably) but it's still a huge shame what happened with the subbed version. It's a positive that my expectations have not dropped after this first episode, but they haven't risen either. Honestly, the best part was when they started the episode with "Thank you, my twilight", easily one of my favorite songs from the pillows.

Japanese version was delayed until November because of incompetence. It was originally gonna be available at the same time as the dub. It's already done. They just won't put it online until the Japanese TV stations can air it because of fear piracy or some garbage excuse like that.

^I think that is unfair to the US side. It seems pretty clear that the Japanese side told them no on short notice, and they can't go against that without risking losing the whole thing. The Japanese side should have said no earlier if that's what they were going to do, though.

I apologize. I didn't want to derail much from the main topic. I just expect that the Japanese would've known about those plans months ago and would've objected back then, rather than last minute. I can only assume the simulcast thing wasn't in the original agreement and so I blame both sides equally for this unless more details are revealed. I don't like assuming things, but the way it happened just doesn't suggest to me that this was entirely the fault of the Japanese. But anyway, at least the dub isn't bad. Good start overall.
