The match between Belgium and Japan was one of the best soccer matches this world has seen this World Cup and although Japan lost, both sides played a tremendous game! If anything, both teams deserve a round of applause for their efforts. Bravo, Japan, for your valiant efforts! |

Japan had a great lead in the second half but Belgium managed to equalize it late in the game and scored a definitive goal at the dying minute. The match felt like it came out from a sports film or a soccer anime as they said. Sorry for that but this is my first World Cup. That 2-0 is usually a safe scoreline for the winning team who can stay defensive until the final whistle. Would have been nice if it went to extra time and then penalties to make it more thrilling. Nonetheless, it was a tremendous game indeed and kudos to both teams for pulling that off. Great giant Captain Tsubasa banner, too. |

See, this is by far not my first World Cup. And let me tell you this: Japan actually PLAYED football. They didn't wall up in their own half and tried to defend their advantage. They even went for the 3:0. That's quite applaudable, because, sadly, any other "big" team would have done what you suggested, which, in my eyes, isn't exactly very sports-minded. Japan was hungry. They fought and lost and can get back to their home with their heads held high, unlike some other teams *cough*Germany*cough*. I can assure you I was far from being snarky. Japan was my 2nd team in the World Cup, and I'm honestly very happy about the wonderful display of football they showed against Belgium. No drama, no diving, pure hard work and lots of commitment. I wish some other teams, like Brazil, Portugal and Colombia, followed their example so football goes back to what it should be, and not the dramaball I've seen. Japan, you the MVP. |

Actually that was a severe strategic mistake by the coach. Japan was defending very well for the first 50 minutes of the match, managing to get 0-0 even though Belgium had far more powerful and physically bigger players, it looked like a David and Goliath match indeed. It was thanks to Belgium's poor defenses (since they were focusing more on attack) and that Japan got extremely lucky to get into Belgium's area and score two goals very quickly. But quickly after that they changed posture to a more aggressive posture than in the previous 50 minutes and that was a severe mistake considering the technical disparity of the teams. Belgium's victory followed. Even if Belgium didn't score in the last minute, they would go into the extra-time of 30 minutes they would probably score and end up winning 3-2. So, instead of holding the 2-0 Japan should have kept playing like they had done in the first half of the match, defensively using a few counterattacks but focused on defense. Instead they choose to play "Argentinian football" which is to keep possession and to try to intimidate the adversary. Argentina did the same against France and in both cases they lost. Despite my disapproval of the Japanese coach's tactics I would say it was an electrifying match indeed, perhaps the best in the world cup in dramatic terms. But in terms of display of art football proficiency I would go with Brazil in the Brazil and Mexico match, also being perhaps the most one-sided match up to now besides those obviously one sided group stage games involving Saudi Arabia, Panama or Tunisia. |
