Is this for Season 2? Or are they doing weekly releases for a series that already aired with weekly releases?

The second one. They'll do the same thing again for the dub when the BD comes out. While I'm glad to finally see the anime appear on a cheaper platform than Amazon, it's pretty annoying that it'll be 3 more months until we can watch the full thing on Hidive. Not sure why Sentai thinks this is a good idea.

I've given feedback to HiDive that "Binge" and "Once a Week" aren't compatible. I don't see any sign of it changing.

If it was a broadcast dub, I agree with the weekly streaming angle. However, since the show is done streaming, a binge-upload of the dub would make more sense to me the same week the boxset gets released.

Co-signed.

I'm by no means a fan of binging shows, but I also hate its exact opposite: waiting a week or more to watch the next episode. Since Sentai has already subbed the entire show, I'd much rather they go up all at once.

The whole weekly release schedule Hidive is doing for Amazon shows doesn't really make sense for them. I wonder if they have to do it that way for some kind of contractual reason, like Amazon having exclusivity until a fixed length from broadcast or something similar. In that case I could see why they'd go with weekly releases instead of waiting for the whole series to clear, but otherwise it's a terrible idea.

I’m not sure why shows that were streamed elsewhere or, have dubs finished don’t just have the episodes uploaded at once either. There must be something concrete behind it. Though, I’m so behind and slow watching things it hardly matters for me if episodes are in a weekly format. I finally caved to paying for Prime Video and that is available with more devices too right now. It’s been, what a year since HIDIVE launched and I still use it the least of the subscriptions I pay for. I shouldn’t be too harsh since they haven’t been around long but, I would probably drop it if HIDIVE did not have some things you could only watch with it.

The "Once a Week" episodic streaming being a contractual obligation to Amazon would make sense, except for Gate, My Love Story and several other series that weren't first streamed on Amazon and should not be restricted.

In any case I need to go the mailbox and retrieve my latest Prime shipment. Wink

I have to assume Sentai's decision stems from reading about all the anime fans complaining about binge model Netflix uses and deciding to go with 1 a week, not realizing the actual reasons for the complaint.

Or do most fans actually want to space out their episodes one a week for everything? Of course those that do, can still space it out themselves while still leaving the option to marathon the show for others (like me)

Given that the dub will most likely be out in August or September, you would think they would wait a bit longer and make it available then

A bit off topic but I'm surprised to hear that. For many years we got a lot of shows through DVD releases, so we just watched them in one go.Even when it was on TV you usually got 5 episodes a week.I would of thought "binge watching" would be considered the normal way of watching an Anime.

I am glad that HIDIVE is finally streaming arguably the best anime show of 2017. I am also not a fan of HIDIVE uploading week to week episodes when the whole thing is available, but that seems to be their business strategy. I honestly don't blame them because they tend to get mostly weak simulcast titles.

I get why HIDIVE releases their catalog dubs week by week, so people who want to see all of the dub now will be forced to buy the home video release. I don’t get why stream their subbed catalog titles weekly though.

So that people who want to see all of the series legally have 2 choices:
1. Stay subscribed for the duration.
2. Wait until it is compete, and then subscribe.

It may also be a way of fooling less savvy anime fans into thinking they are watching a true simulcast. I've come across some people that seem to have little awareness of what comes out each season.

HIDIVE does list the original year the show began in the show information, e.g. Aura Battler Dunbine is shown to have originally premiered in 1983 under general information, though each episode has a premier date stating 2018. I assume this is because this is the first date the show has ever been streamed online (legally, with English subs in any case). However, for other shows that have already been streamed (likely as a simulcast) elsewhere, HIDIVE does post that original simulcast date under each episode; e.g. Land of the Lustrous is currently up to episode 3 there, and the premier dates are all listed as 2017.

While you could argue that HIDIVE is taking advantage of the inattentiveness of viewers, since many will likely not even bother to glance at such dates, saying that they're "fooling" fans seems unfair, since the information is right there for anyone who actually pays a little attention.

This sounds like what HiDive is doing with Grimoire of Zero, where they have all of the episodes subbed, but dubbed episodes become available weekly.

I'm actually excited about this announcement.
