Partially, I feel unease about this, like shouldn't the idol trend be over already? And what about in 2021?? But at the same time, Humikane has done art for existing witches with this theme before, so it's not totally out of nowhere, and makes just enough sense in-universe as equivalent to military bands. New characters from Humikane are definitely a good thing though.

I don't think liking idols is a trend, whatsoever. Making idol anime series might be; on the other hand it's not like there were many high profile projects in that regard.

Strike Witches: Love Live Edition, eh? Plus idol group next year and anime coming two years after that. This might sound worth trying but I do not think that jumping to a trending genre is always a good idea.

It's a combination of too big to fail and cultural icon, they aren't going away even in your great-great grandchildren's future. However, it will be one of the first ecchi idol anime on TV, because nobody seemed to go close to all the way with it except for hentai.

50 bucks that it will have zero ecchi in it.
The franchise could get rid of lolis, it could get rid of being pantless, I don't see a reason why it wouldn't get rid of sexualization.
