Is there a reason that we're just now getting a review for volume 2 when the fifth volume is due to release in about a week?

Interesting that you brought up Hunter X Hunter because the dynamic between Emma and Ray in particular feels very reminscent of Gon and Killua spoiler[(well minus any ocassional romantic subtext weirdly enough)] in regards to one being optimistic and reckless while the other is calculating and cynical.

Out of all the material from the first arc of TPN I'd say this volume is probably the weakest since it's the one most populated by exposition, but it pays off in spades for the next for the next couple. The traitor stuff is really great though because it's the first clear indication that TPN is more interested in long-term storytelling than simply being shocking as a thriller because where a lot of stuff would drag that mystery out as long as possible, spoiler[Ray] gets outed almost immediately and it instead serves as way to give us a clearer indication of his worldview, and ties it into the overall idealism v.s. cynicism conflict really well.

Yeah, at this point in the series, it feels like the authors weren't really sure what to do now that the ratings came in and The Promised Neverland turned out to be well-liked. That is, I believe that the two of them expected the manga to be quickly canceled, then got a "Now what?" moment as they stretched out the next few plot points. The result is some odd pacing problems and some pretty forced new developments, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt and that they could pull through and smooth things out later. Considering this manga's still running now, I'm glad I was right.
