Hope we can see a western home video release of this sometime, or at least stream like on Netflix, as it didn’t play in theaters anywhere near me.

It was alright...
It's a film you only need to see once. I don't think it's a mandatory buy, myself. I'm pretty sure this material has been covered in novels and short stories already. What made it unique was that that this was Mari Okada's directorial debut not that the story was novel. It really wasn't. ................ ................ A shame it didn't screened wider than it was. I think it literally played two days in my area but it only played at one theater on one screen. I'd say the theater I was in (small, about 100 seats maybe) was about half-full. There have been other anime releases that screened in 4 theaters, maybe 8-10 screens at once on at least 4-6 days, upwards of twice a day? Usually, they're only in the area for a week, two tops, and they'll play 2 times a week, once each day. You have to be on the ball, watch the anime sites and bookmark your local art and independent theaters' websites. Don't depend on newspapers and always watch the "coming soon" links to see when a film will be coming to your area. The art theater in my area does a good job of telling you online on their website what's coming over the next 3-4 months. Those are the guys picking up these films -- not generally AMC, Cinemark. The Fathom Events presentations are variable. The films being distributed by GKids generally do hit the larger markets. Most of these films eventually get a home video distributor (IF it wasn't already announced before they screened!) but not all of them. Nobody's picked up the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanohana: Reflection film yet and that's already been released on home video in Japan. For all the hype over Maquia got online, the distribution fizzled despite the fact they stressed that it was produced by the same guys who made "Your Name." It just goes to show once again that the rules are different for independent and foreign films than they are for Hollywood. It doesn't mean squat if it's popular or promoted well in Japan. It doesn't mean a movie or TV series will find a big audience here. That's just how it is -- there's no conspiracy here. The cultures and expectations are utterly different. |

I don't think I saw that claim anywhere, nor is it true. The production studio for this film is PA Works and Showgate is the distributor. For Your Name, the production studio was Comix Wave Films and the distributor was Toho. The production staff are also completely different. Genki Kawamura was the producer for Your Name and Kenji Horikawa was the producer for Maquia. You might be thinking of "Fireworks," which was produced by Genki Kawamura. |
