With China being a communist nation, how does intellectual property work in that country? From my understanding, the practice of communism doesn't favor having personal property.

If you're curious, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property_in_China gives a pretty decent summary! Short answer: there are a lot of rules that people break all the time, with inconsistent repercussions for doing so.

I wonder if this is being done to give Square Enix a strong foothold in the Chinese market, similar to how many movies are using Chinese actors in order to get around China's limit of showing 15(?) foreign movies in its cinema per year.

I feel China has baited companies into investing in their country just to end up stealing the technology/companies once they've gotten a significant enough market share? Imagine if China became a full fledged capitalist country, they'd be ruling the world by now instead of just stealing stuff from everyone else.
