The new ED really spoiled a lot of shit. But then again, that's only if you're up to date with the manga.

I'm really shocked this new season is only going to be 12 episodes. I have to wonder how much there going to streamline the plot for what they're going to adapt from the manga for this season. I have a bad feeling this is going to be a bit of a rushed mess.

James, you're one lucky son of a gun getting this show to review! Though considering the previous shows you reviewed, aside from the pinnacles of awfulness, I does make sense.

Great start to the season, for the show and otherwise. I was worried I would feel differently about the show after so long, but thankfully not at all. Titan is back in all its glory, if that is what you want to call graphic scenes of people being devoured, and I do. The beast titan is definitely an excellently sinister addition, and I do like me some conspiracies (in fiction). I can't wait to see what this season has in store for us.

James, is reviewing Attack on Titan this season your reward for reviewing Hand Shakers last season. If so, you deserve it.

"James will be disappointed if Dino titans don't appear in the end of the season"

Ahahahahahaha...James, you are the best! But seriously though, I absolutely love the half conservative, half shamelessly over-the-top visuals (SYMBOLISMMMM) of this season's opening! Really hypes me up! Who's with me? Anime hyper

PS: Can man-eating titans cure James' "wounded heart" thanks to Hand Shakers?

I know everybody is on the hype train after 4 years of the first season, but for me it was just a regular episode (reading ahead might be a factor) with interesting highlights, particularly relating to the character's interactions and reactions (Sasha, Connie, Reiner and Bertholdt). Of course, the last sequences are pretty neat animation and directing-wise, though I have no particular care for Zacharius, so it's good that his death was impactful enough to re-set the mood.

The OP is entirely skippable for me, it doesn't induce the minimal bit of blood-pumping action for me and it feels horribly boring.

Here I am hoping the shorter cour makes for the most impressive moments that follow and the quickest handle possible of The Talk Arc 2 that Isayama is incredibly bad at managing.

Haha, no, I didn't need any reward for that. Hand Shakers was it's own kind of twisted opportunity. I am very excited to cover AoT, though! It might be Hand Shakers' diametric opposite, which is perfectly fine with me Cool

Was it just my fancy, do the first episode swiftly cover quite a bit of the original material? It's a bit of a blur in my memory, but I'm sure the Beast Titan didn't appear for a couple chapters after the last chapter of the first series' coverage. Whatever, I think it gets quite baggy from here on in, so if it can be tightened up more the better.

As a manga reader, that was an excellent first episode. It was paced really well - covering the rest of chapter 34 and chapter 35 without dragging it's feet thanks to smart added material.

Great opening, but also very good ending for those familiar with the manga and already know what's up - it would be a complete mystery to anime-only viewers.

The character stuff - from some added scenes to ones that actually were there in the manga (the scene between Eren and Mikasa was added in the anime) were the highlight to me. Sure, the other stuff was excellent, too, some great animation and really good tension-building, but I share the sentiment with an above poster that I don't care about Mike that much. So, the scenes with Hange, the 104th (Sasha, Connie, Reiner and bertholdt) and as mentioned, the added Eren and Mikasa scene is what stood out to me the most.

Particularly the scene with Eren and Mikasa and what it showed about Eren's character and these two's relationship - it'll become very important by season's end.

The Mike scene had excellent direction, though and I've loved that scene for the Beast Titan's introduction, but Mike was only in a couple of scenes. His death is gruesome - one of the most horrible ones in the story - but if I'd even known Mike for a few moments more I'd have cared just a tad more. At least we saw Petra being kind and the Levi squad apologizing to Eren - they had basically a whole episode dedicated to their bond and the characters had some brief fun scenes sprinkled in there to develop them enough.

Never got that with Mike, so I don't really get about caring about him that much outside of his cruel fate.

The animation in this episode looked great for the most part. The brief cuts of CG soldiers on the horses looked terrible but it was brief. It will be interesting to see if Wit can keep a consistent level of animation quality this season. They recruited some very talented animators from Production I.G. so I'm hopeful. I'm hoping the shorter season will lend itself to tighter pacing and more animation consistency.

Production I.G is putting a lot of money into it. I saw it through a site specializing in Sakuga. Some people complained a bit about the CG transition to 2D in the episode; I found it to be medium. CG is a characteristic of Production I.G, so it is normal for Wit to use, as it does always and always in the scenarios, which does not leave the animation completely inconsistent. Being 12 episodes I believe the series can stand out. The episode itself was good, although the direction could have been a little firmer in the parts that preceded the conflict between Mike and the Titans, as well as the scene of Hange and Father Nick. As a whole it was a good episode.

as a manga reader I like the added scens that dro more subtle hints to certain things, makes it a more enjoyable watch if youa lready know what's going on, the pacing feels also pretty good, which is a big factor for later content.

I don't read the manga so I had kind of forgotten about this series during the lengthy break, and the massive fan fervor started to get on my nerves after a while too, but watching this new episode brought back all the fun I felt when watching it for the first time. The scene with the beast Titan was very exciting to watch and had a lot of "oh s**t!" moments.
It's going to be hard waiting a week between episodes.
