oh god, can you just imagine having to wait an entire year to watch SAO if netflix got the rights to it? By then the hype for the show would have died down so much people will have mostly forgotten about it!

I doubt there was even a fight. Why? because Aniplex understands that fans want to see the show streaming weekly. Netflix would be a no go and Amazon does not have the best reputation among fans.

Ye but still money talks you know...Perhaps in this case it didn't because of fans yeh but still i honestly wouldnt be surprised if i saw a news of amazon getting exclusing rights for it for example.... But luckily the best streaming company got it so all good in the end. Will see if they can manage to get index 3rd season aswell etc

It becomes a matter of more money upfront vs more money over time.

Exposure generates interest and interest generates income. So they could decide to sell licensing at a high price, but then have less exposure, or sell licensing for a lower price and bank on all the interest it generates. As with most franchises, merchandise is generally the core of profit.

I'm not sure why anyone would assume SAO would stream on Amazon or Netflix? Outside of the Noetimina block and a few random shows like Seven Senses that no one watches, Amazon hasn't licensed a major anime since Anime Strike shut down. Netflix has always only ever streamed SAO after it finishes airing. It wasn't until several years after it aired that Netflix finally streamed the English dub of season two. New SAO episodes have always been on Crunchyroll and they're a reliable streaming service for Aniplex and have been streaming dubs for Aniplex shows like Granblue Fantasy and Kiznaiver.

Amazon also gets the Animeism shows every season.

Yeah, I doubt this was even an issue. Every previous SAO animation except Ordinal Scale has streamed on CR, and mid-franchise streaming jumps between sites that aren't affiliated are fairly rare. It would have been much more surprising if anyone but CR had gotten it.
