Already knew this was going to happen (due to the list of expiring Aniplex titles) so I picked up all three movies from Right Stuf a few months ago.

Oh good, one more title for Aniplex to hold hostage until the end of time. A continued middle-finger salute, good sirs.

Were the films EVER that popular?

All I can remember reading was people bitching about the third film and the overly long game of poker(?) in it.
They weren't the greatest films but they're also not the worst, either...

They weren't the "best" and not the "worst"? That's a pretty wide gap, that to me means they could have been good, alright, just okay, not very good, or bad. There's a lot of possibilities there.

In my opinion the movies were good. Sure they're not the greatest movies ever as you said, but they're an entertaining sci-fi action trilogy that I'm glad I own nonetheless.
