Years later, we finally get the punchline for the infamous TBA.

Well, it was highly unlikely that would reprise his role considering he's now the go-to voice actor for AAA games. I highly doubt that he will return for Catherine: Full Body either.

Absolute gut punch right there I'm very disappointed, the VA I most wanted to reprise his role too. The only way to soften the blow will be if Matt Mercer is the VA that is replacing him. Just another reason I prefer JP dubs and their consistency, barring some major incident a JP VA voices a role for life. Sad

Isn't it funny how in Japan the role the VA plays is respected as much as the VA themselves? While in the west neither is really respected at all and devs/studios will change a character's VA at the drop of a hat.

Except it's not, especially when it comes to japanese VA going to forced to interrupt their work in order to improve their health. Did Risa Taneda get back her roles like Mash in FGO game and future anime projects, and Erina in the Shokugeki no Souma after she's got back from treating, no? Did Yoshimasa Hosoya got his role back in Ensemble Stars, even after they relaunched the project?

The reason why they are replacing Matt as an subtitute for the game is due to Baker is an video game celebrity voice aritsts which is why he can't voice any Japanese stuffed games and anime anymore, he is more into the Western stuff right now.

(sorry for my poor English)

Another case similar to Gohan & Freeza in DBZ Ultimate Tenkaichi (though half of that blame is on Spike for reusing lines from Raging Blast 1 in I believe both versions for the fights).

Bamco should have done what Capcom did for Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition when they had Kate Higgins redub all of Lady's lines (not just for the new content). As it is from that gameplay video, the difference in Yuri VAs is noticeable since it looks like they didn't get the usual go-to replacement, Matt Mercer, to voice him either (it's rumored to be Grant George but I'm not so sure myself).

At least there's the Japanese option but still, it sucks to see this kind of inconsistency happen.

Well she couldn't take back her role when she just got back from Hietus and Food Wars latest season was pretty much ending so it wouldn't make sense to come back since it wouldn't feel natural to replace the current Erina voice, after she pretty much voice since the last season OVA. It would make more sense that Risa take back her role in a new season so it can feel natural.

Actually when this was brought to his attention on Twitter he said he was never approached about the reprising the role and he would’ve gladly come back for it if asked.

Here’s the tweet

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood shows that isn't always the case as IIRC in the Japanese version they recast everyone aside from Ed and Al themselves whereas FUNimation got as many of the original VAs as they reasonably could (Al had to be changed since it was an actual kid voicing him for the 2003 series so his voice no longer fit the character later obviously).

Matt would have been the obvious choice, but Grant George will be doing the extra lines for Yuri.

Not really. There are cases where Japanese VAs have dropped a role or a different person was hired because the previous one (or their agency) was difficult to work with. Sometimes they just do a near total recasting, as doctordoom85 pointed out in the case of Fullmetal Alchemist. It's not exclusive to the west. Besides, if that were the case, then going by your blanket logic, Estelle and the others would have been replaced too.

Quite sure theres many jump event ovas made where the voice actors chosen aren't the ones voicing the character(s) in the eventual tv/full anime

Then there's also what happened with Berserk. Japan recast everybody for the Golden Age movies yet for the dub, Viz had them sent to the studio who worked on the 90s series for Media Blasters and got everyone back for them........then there's CG sequel(s) which had Japan keep the same replacement cast (who also voiced in the much better Musou game) while Crunchyroll sent that to Bang Zoom for it's dub with most of the remaining characters recast. Mad

he speaks as if he would have totally come back if they just asked him, right?Has Atlus asked him to reprise Kanji for the multiple Persona games since he became big?If Atlus ask, will he come back for Catherine?
You gotta be naive if you think he's coming back for Catherine if they just contact(and don't expect Laura Bailey to return either...)

I can see her going back to voicing Erina if we ever get more Food Wars before spring because Erina's replacement in Hisako Kanemoto went on hiatus to study till march next year.
