This sounds super fun. I should probably get to reading the manga, since Funimation ruined the Japanese version forever by having a far more entertaining dub. It's like the saying goes. Never fly First Class. It ruins coach forever.

How many fans remember the mantra of "Hey, at least the disks still include the subbed version, buy it for that!"? |

That was back when they were trying to put it on Adult Swim with Shin-chan, right? Never saw the dub myself, but if it was anything like Shin-chan then yeah, I can see why it didn't appeal to anime fans much.

It WAS like Shin-chan--so desperately "From the producers of Shin-chan!" to continue the lucrative Swim deal, the sweat showed--and once they found out the series wasn't a spastic after-hours censored-gag-a-minute Shin-chan and nobody did inappropriate elephant-dances (probably around the "Fuyuki's mermaid" episode, one of the, quote, "Boring serious" Junichi Sato episodes), and then found out that Adult Swim didn't want it anyway, oh, how Funi began to loathe that series...
I dare you to get through three episodes of the dub before the constant, constant, CONSTANT 24/7 need to "define" every localized reference with a hip stoner-friendly joke about an 80's TV show or movie--as if the translators literally needed one as their own Millennial crutch for themselves to understand what was going on in the scene--makes you nearly want to Frisbee the disk at a wall...Er, unless you quickly remembered the original sub was still on it, and stopped in time. 
And now, insert loyal dub defender saying "But Chris Sabat did such a good job as Giroro!" Yes...He does. Note-perfectly. How we pitied him for his brave stand at trying to do a series-faithful version, almost in the doomed-warrior spirit of Giroro himself. Would that we could say as much for R. Bruce Elliot's obnoxious snarky-"hip" interpretation of the Narrator, who got to voice most of Funi's private anger-issues at the series after they desperately wanted to get out of their deal. |

I think I remember the dub in the later seasons they calmed down somewhat on trying to be hip and with crude jokes. It didn't seem as frequent, kinda like they gave up trying. I love the voice cast, mixed about the writing. I don't mind edits, just sometimes they can go too far with adult humor or dated American culture jokes.
Anyway back on topic, I love that Yoshikazu Yasuhiko Gundam homage poster. I'm kinda interested in this even though I never read the manga or completed the anime. Perhaps it be like a parody re-telling of the MS Gundam movie trilogy? |

The translators seemed to be almost drug-dependent on using American culture jokes to understand what was going on, even when it didn't even need translating-- The joke about Fuyuki feeling guilty about watching Keroro on hidden camera had to be turned into an entire conversation about The Dark Knight because, well..."surveillance", and the joke about Keroro remodeling the house, complete with railroad crank-car powered elevator, becomes "Our tribute to 'O Brother Where Art Thou?'" (Because, y'know...."Crank-car".) The need to jam in US culture jokes out of nowhere for no earthly reason put them so far off of lip-synch, the delivery needed to make up for twice as much lost time, andhavetomotormouththedialoguejusttogetbackonstorytranslationagain, making it sound even more ADHD sped-up than your average Family Guy episode. And then, there was that episode where Keroro watches the Olympics on TV, and gets the idea to train the squad for a gold medal in Water-ballet: In the dub version, he tells the squad, "I just saw this cool 80's rerun on TV, 'Exo-Squad'!", and then later in the pool, the Narrator asks "Wait, what's going on? Why are they in the pool? What happened to talking about Exo-Squad?" Gee, I can't imagine, what did happen to it?

They were absolutely designed to appeal to the same crowd of Adult Swim fans. I had an ex who didn't care for anime, but loved the Funimation versions of Shin-chan and Sgt. Frog, and was constantly asking me why there weren't any more shows like those two. |

Dub was fine, not perfect, but entertaining enough, and is actually more akin to Funimation's dub of the original Dragon Ball than anything else, but whereas the lewder Toriyama humor in that show was generally toned down for midday Toonami or whatever else, Sgt. Frog's keeps what was in the Japanese remnants; Mild to heavy adaptation in some episodes (mostly in earlier episodes) but still at least following the same beats, while others are pretty much the original script with minor punch-up (mostly in the later parts-- yes, it was indeed better when they generally stopped trying to be cute with the script in episodes 26-78, comprising 'season 2' and 'season 3'!), helped by VAs that really lean into the craziness and traits, amplified by the dub, of the characters, but can also do the somber and sweet when it calls for it (notably Natsumi getting sick, the 'leaving' episodes, and the one with the lucky ball)
The manga is hilarious and absolutely worth it, especially since there are things that are omitted from the anime like some of the darker humor and potshots. Heavier on the fanservice too, if one digs that.
This went unreported by ANN, but it very likely has more to do with a general new promotion push for the 20th anniversary of the franchise that includes a new anime project of some sort with Bandai Namco Pictures, teased in December 2017 by Sunrise, alongside a brand new Keroro Robo, and the copyright listings on the bottom of that page and everything related to this is the exact same as the group from the original anime, as opposed to the 2014 flash anime and other tie-ins that only credit Mine Yoshizaki, Kadokawa, and Sunrise. It may end up tying in with whatever that turns out to be. |
