Not really, it had already been confirmed that it would be 2 cour, what they have now confirmed is the number of episodes.

If they plan to faithfully adapting the LN, then it really deserve it, so far it's a good start, the first ep was a faithful adaptation.

I would actually argue the majority of isekai anime get more than one cour because isekai is a massively popular anime genre now. SAO, Overlord, and Log Horizon were all multiple seasons and ReZero was two cour. Grimgar was only 12 episodes but it was never that popular of a show in spite of being really good. No Game No Life was more of an issue of a lack of source material to adapt a full season but it did get a widely successful movie. Unless there's a major production issue, a show like this is likely going to be an instant blockbuster hit with fans. Like any anime genre, it depends on how popular the anime is if it gets more or not.

And I would give the counter-argument that you are cherry picking examples. As isekai has become a more popular genre the quality of shows has declined. In a very short time we had Deathmarch, Smartphone, and Knight's and Magic, all eminently forgettable shows with the same shtick: someone goes into a different world with something from this world which gives them an unfair advantage. There were two more single-cour isekai animes over the Summer season. The manga publishers and animation producers are cashing in on the popularity of the concept of isekai with a steady output of dross.

If there is any good news, That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime might be it. I have learned that when they start doing shows which skewer a genre it can be taken as a sign that the general public is getting tired of the genre, mostly because of the bad shows, so any future offerings in the genre are likely to be better conceived, written, drawn, animated, etc. In other words, actual creativity might just return to isekai anime in the near future.

Im saying that this genre of anime usually (in recent years) only get 1 cour at a time. Not including any other seasons of the same series, especially when it's a completely new anime adaptaion. Recent examples: How not to summon a demon lord, master of ragnorok, deathmarch.

Regarding SAO, I simply don't believe it to be the same genre as these anime for reasons I wont argue. Rezero and log horizon on the other hand are good examples to support your argument except saying theyre apart of the majority is a mistake. Overlord, though it does have multiple seasons/cours; it was originally airing as a 1 cour anime.

Re:Zero, Saga of Tanya the Evil, and KonoSuba all came out before Knight's, Smartphone, Death March, Ragnarok, and Demon Lord. I read that Reincarnated as a Slime ends up being fairly standard wish-fulfillment fare once the MC gets his human form (not a spoiler since it's seen in the OP at the end of the first episode, and in promo art).

The upcoming "So I'm a Spider, So What?" seems to diverge more from the norm, though I read that even that MC becomes overpowered after a while. Seems like more of a flavor variant than a "skewering."

Next season we've got the highly anticipated Rising of the Shield Hero, which starts out as MC's self-pity angst fest, but readers say it becomes a typical harem after a while.

I started watching self-insert wish-fulfillment power-trip fantasy harem anime in 2000 (Tenchi Muyo). That market ebbs and flows in quantity and quality. If isekai stops selling, I'd expect to see less new isekai shows for a while, rather than better isekai shows. The production committee members know that creativity and "good writing" don't necessarily sell. That said, Slime, Spider and Shield Hero are all more creative than Smartphone / Death March / Ragnarok / Demon Lord.

While Smartphone was airing, people were effectively saying that Konosuba and Re:Zero had invalidated the wish fulfillment formula by subverting it. But Konosuba's uncomfortable home situation, and increasingly tired jokes in the second season, actually made me want a pleasant, easygoing show like Smartphone, which I had a good time watching. Showing people a smart subversion of wish fulfillment doesn't cure their enjoyment of wish fulfillment.

I'd say a "blockbuster hit" would mean getting a sequel if there's enough material, but Smartphone didn't get one and it doesn't seem likely for Death March or Ragnarok. I think Demon Lord has the best shot at a sequel, out of those four.

It's really hard to follow this discussion with you guys using these dub titles >.<

Back to topic... I really hope the anime gets the credit it deserves and someday gets a 2nd season. With 24 episodes we should probably get to Charybdis, unless they rush it, then they could go even further than the manga.

24 episodes? Wasn't expecting that.

Guess you can call this "That time I got reincarnated as a 24 episode anime".

A lot of people use English titles even though they only watch subs, because Japanese is too confusing even in romaji form. On Crunchyroll, which offers probably around 97% sub-only anime, I've seen an article comment listing shows in romaji get mass-downvoted, while a reply saying "Look how much more of a fan you are than us!" got upvoted.

I get used to the Japanese titles since my main anime social site is MAL, but elsewhere I figure it's more considerate to default to English if I know it.

On topic: I've been getting tired of these shows being one [cour] and done more than the formula itself, so I was glad to find out this was getting two. Initially didn't believe it when I heard it from a guy on CR.

.

Three episodes in and Slime is already into the stage of "Everything happens too easily for the MC" which was the bane of Smartphone, Death March, and to a lesser extent, Knight's. Is this what you are classifying as wish fulfillment? Masaki Tenshi most definitely didn't have everything resolve in his favor easily. Not to say I did not enjoy those three shows. The characters were at least interesting and/or amusing, and I am still following the manga for Death March because there's an intriguing story there.

It's only a matter of when the popularity of isekai is going to wane. There is a glut in the mangaverse currently, most of it dross. By comparison, look at mecha. For years it was the king of visual media in Japan. How many new mecha animes are there this season? Or this year, for that matter? Probably count them on one hand. But the few which are made are on average better than 20 years ago when they were ubiquitous or even 15 years ago when everyone was trying to incorporate the organic mechas from NGE into their designs simply because it was "the thing". This is what I meant by isekai getting better. The bar for making it into production will be higher. This won't mean the end of wish fulfillment in isekai, I hope.
