It might also be an homage to the much-memed Kannazuki no Miko image, too.

This might be the most blatant reference yet, but what's neat is it's not the first time Pokemon has referenced Utena. There was an Utena reference in the Erika episode (the spinning Gloom borders) and the Snorlax episode. (Jessie silhouetted against a fairy tale backdrop while telling the story of Prince Charming is reminiscent of Utena's opening sequence) Even the episode where Meowth kept taking care of Togepi's egg had a bit of an Utena vibe with how it's like the episode where Nanami takes care of her own egg. So it seems there's been some Utena fans on the Pokemon staff for quite a while now.

20 years after the episode "Wake Up Snorlax" first referenced Utena, Pokémon decided to do it again. Looks amazing!

Well, now they have gone even further, so it would be funny if in some episode they openly portrayed yuri in Takarazuka's style, lol.

Digimon Adventure 02 has also featured an Utena homage in one episode where Yolei imagines herself getting closer with Mimi and she imagines them in an outfit style resembling Utena and Anthy. People in the monster anime industry in general seem to be big Utena fans.

Since the beginning of S&M they have tried a lot things that would have seem weird at first ( or weren't done since a whole era ) for a Pokemon serie and always end up working wonderfully, now another parody of such a good serie, it's gonna be a nice nostalgic moment ( little anecdote, Pokemon's anime started 1 day sooner that Utena's ) , can't wait for next sunday as always Sun & Moon never cease to surprise me. So far this generation is a good exemple of how benefiical it can be when they decide to try an atipical approch, the same old adventure every generation was getting redundant after 2 decades.

KOTOKO's Agony is playing in my mind every time i see this parody.

Two questions:
1) As someone who only watched the 90's 4Kids classic (now aka "Indigo League"), what's the reference, and how did it survive translation?

and
2) Having just gone through the glorious (and better-animated) original from cover to cover again on Netflix, what series/plot developments have I missed in brief, seeing as Netflix now only has the XYZ and S&M anime for streaming?
After a few other trainer protagonists, I see Ash is back, and Team Rocket, or at least Jessie, is still after them, but I seem to have missed a bit. Or is this just rebooting from scratch for the new games?

Meh should've had Ash crossdress as Utena instead, it would've made more sense plus he is the MC and all.

Fascinating.
If, the staff confirms this, this makes me very happy as a staunch KnM fan!

I love that cute Lillie x Mallow yuri pic. Kudos to Pokemon for the nice Utena shout-out.

I have seen that yuri meme everywhere but I think this one may be just a coincidence. Still, thanks for bringing that up.

No rebooting the story until S&M have always been following the same pattern generation after generation that is to say :

1- After partciping to the previous region league and parting with his old companions Ash either receive a mission from professor, meet someone/rival coming from the next region or simply want to wants to broaden its knowledge and and go on a trip to another region with only Pikachu ( The trio from the Team Rocket is always following him ).

2- There he meets with the local professor, get his new pokedex, starts his journey to confront the Gym Leaders and meets new companions ( sometimes older one ), all of them have their own goal, actress and doctor were the most frequent .

3- After defeating the Gym Leaders, an arc ( usually the longer ) that is centered on the current generation's Legendary Pokemon and Gang "X" start.
Gang "X" lost, Ash and co part with the legendary they befriend with and are now heading towards the Pokemon League.

4- After the Pokemon League the group is parting.

Repeat N°1

Add to this a lot of fillers that center on the peoples/pokemons they meet on their way + Team Rocket's fiasco ( pretty much every eps beside the legendary arc )

So far only S&M didn't followed this pattern

Yes, it might be a coincidence, though there is also the whole sun and moon element in the original KnM image.
