It’s open market, and censorship has always led to bad things happening to the censor.

Just another action from Sony to push away future consumers from their platform. Game developers in Japan have already started moving away from Sony due to PS4 sales heavily declining in favor of Switch and PC. This is more of a nail in the coffin for any indie/smaller company, leaving only major players like Square Enix and Capcom.

PS4 is already dead in japan anyway, that´s why Sony allowed the US branch of PlayStation to take complete control.

This needless censorship and new policies are really making me HATE Sony now and they've always been my primary source of gaming. Sigh guess I'll have to buy all future Japanese titles on Switch since at least they aren't butchering games due to some bullshit moral highground over fictional content.

A few weeks late to the news ANN but better late than never. Truly shameful from Soyny. This is why you don't let moral crusaders (or in this case those who hate anything aimed at straight men seemingly) in charge. 'they're not going to take your games away' they said and now look where we are. Enforcing censorship only on Japanese games because protect the wahmen.

This has effected the release of the new DoA X3 Scarlet with Sony forcing censorship while Switch versions remains as intended. Further proof that it is a policy change from Soyny. It is 100% proven at this point there is no debate. Its not even the 'girls are too young' thing anymore. They are full on going after anything sexual from Japan.

But its okay to murder, brutally beat and inflict extreme violence on others so don't worry guys you can still do that all day! That is definitely less harmful than a girl in a bikini I think we can all agree.

Agreed, in the long term this is going to harm Sony more than any other company. Sony has made it clear that they don't care about gamers, that they are willing to betray game developers, and that they will agree to censorship if a tiny number of people demand it. Considering how quickly Sony embraced censorship for visual novels I am curious to see how many more censorship changes they will make to their license agreement over the next few years.

"And we're getting various questions that we are asked to answer entirely in English." said the visibly shaken man. "They handed me... a PEN!" jaws drop as he continues. "The air in the room was a degree too cold!" a woman in the back row literally dies from shock.

Sony need to get off their moral high horse and just die already.

Nobody needs Sony anymore.

The thing they did that angered me was giving up on portables. They make a much better portable than nintendo.

While I don't have any interest in these particular games, I do think that this is something that deserves attention, so I'm glad ANN is reporting on it. It's one thing to make a separate version of a game when it's released in another country, it's another to force a developer to meet another country's standards even when there are probably no plans to release it there.

Especially since Playstation has been a pretty international console historically. I don't even want America setting the standard for what's acceptable in America, much less the rest of the world.

Aside from the developers already tied up with Sony who probably feel like the rules have changed since the time they signed contracts, it's probably a bad sign in the long run for the mid-level developers of niche games. Losing the Playstation is going to hit some of them pretty hard, and "just use Steam" is still a big hit for the developers, since the PC gaming culture isn't that hot in Japan. No developer is going to want to plan two versions of a game in advance, so I suspect that for games not already in the pipeline, these questionable aspects are not going to be made for any platforms, not just PS.

It's not the biggest deal in the world, but it does make me sad when entertainment creativity is stifled for reasons that have nothing to do with what the developers or consumers want. I've always liked Japan's somewhat more playful relationship with sexuality in entertainment, as compared with America, where all sexuality seems to be presented seriously, dramatically, or horribly.

I will preface this by saying my first owned console was a PS One and my favorite controller is the Dual Shock 2.

I have long side eyed Sony for being the company that thrives mainly only when their competitors make mistakes, and are usually only more open when forced to be. I haven't forgotten how many great titles they prevented from being localized on the old Playstations because they were too 2D or whatever, or how they only cared about the indie market when they thought Microsoft was going to be on top next gen and stopped giving a shit the moment they won by default.

I also understand why people may look at this as stupid and not worth caring about, since it mainly seems to only be effecting boobies games that are often not very good anyway.

But this is one of those things where you don't care about it until you do - as in, this is the sort of thing that effects what does and doesn't get made, so it could very well block something you care about from being released intact, or released at all, because of whatever hang ups Sony has (which may not be limited to simply showing too much skin). I don't think they have to be like Steam and open the floodgates, but when they're deciding just an ESRB label isn't enough and they get to alter existing content they were seemingly OK with before, it does set a precedent.

I will also mention that I appreciate ANN's careful coverage of this - I know sometimes they get criticized for being late, but when they put something up you can typically be pretty sure they got all the details available. It does seem like there's a lot of confusion going on around this story since it appears there's no official information being put out there.

I also love how some of the more aggressive light bar censorship efforts make the content seem much more objectionable than it is. ANYTHING could be going on under those bars, and our experience with censorship makes us think that the worst things are hidden. (e.g. A girl in a bikini suddenly looks naked.) It's like when Criminal Girls got "censored" to turn light-hearted S&M play into a creepy erotic torture dungeon (for clarity, that case was to get it by the ESRB, not Sony).

I'm honestly expecting Sony to get crushed next gen, and I say this as a long time PS owner from the original onwards never having owned any xbox. I don't really expect the censorship to be the big factor though because they don't seem to be censoring big name Western games (despite some of these having more explicit nudity), and none of these games getting censored are going to move consoles.

That said, it seems like they're pulling a Microsoft here and just in general are trying to push onto their consumers what they think we should want rather than what we actually want.

There are only 2 series which would make me buy a PS5 anyway though. Monhun is getting PC releases now so unless that stops, I won't buy a PS5 for it. The other is Gundam Versus, but I don't know if they'll be doing more console version of that anyway.
