HIDIVE's sub customization options are tragically limited.

That's how I feel about the "subtitles" (really cc) on Amazon Prime on my roku TV - I've talked to customer service and there is literally no way to customize them and they are super tiny.

My Hidive subs are giant yellow and in the middle of the screen (like over their faces??)

Although HIDIVE isn't available yet in my side of the world, this is also one of the common complaints I've noticed. It would be great if HIDIVE provides more options to customize the subtitles like size and color.

I'm happy to know that this anime adaptation is so accurate to the manga. My Fridays have been worth it because of this. Bless Nio Nakatani, bless innocent yuri romance.

spoiler[Citrus anime adaptation still left a bad taste in my mouth]

That's what I see if I watch HIDIVE through my mobile browser. The captions look fine on the actual HIDIVE app (see https://twitter.com/invalidname/status/1063787810853961728), but apparently they had to pull the iOS app off the store for some reason? And there's no Roku app at all.

Maybe this is why they're in a hurry to get their stuff on VRV: technically speaking, HIDIVE is kind of a disaster on the client side.

Great article, really sums up my thoughts on the series well. As I have said elsewhere, this is one of my favorite manga ever because it’s so nuanced and feels real (well, plus or minus as real as anime gets).

Sigh, and I would love to have that Kase-san OVA released over here too.

And, while everything said in this review is true, it's also true that there are absolutely no shortage of great anime that play to the sexual preferences of all viewers. So rather than watching a great (and it is absolutely a top 5 show of season. Easily) show about a relationship that does not turn you on, you can can watch one of literally thousands of Anime just as good as this one, featuring a relationship that DOES turn you on. So you don't have to feel left out. Even better, you don't even have to feel guilty for skipping this one entirely if it makes you feel uncomfortable. Because that's normal. We all like what we like.

HOPE THIS HELPS

It's pretty interesting, because the way the show is directed tends to yield a lot of these distant shots like someone's watching from afar, and Maki's whole thing is that he observes and absorbs other people's relationships while not participating in any himself.

And no one noticed that the whole Maki subplot is a huge take that! to yuri fandom and fans of fictional romance in general. Especially in terms of the desire to see suffering in someone's romantic relationship or a fundamental desire to be excluded from the "plot" as an observer. Hell, at the end of one of the episodes, he even directly "interprets" the relationship between Yuu and Touko to provide the Yuu with "proof of their ship tease".

I loved episode 6 a lot, but this was where Bloom Into You skyrocketed into "Best of the Season" territory, simply by how definitively it rejects the whole "it's a phase"/Class S bullshit by following up Sayaka's awful flashback with a loving adult lesbian couple.

So, according to Steve, Class S is a “homophobic bullshit,” because its image of homosocial relationship and romantic friendship does not turn into an open image of lesbian relationship, and this Japanese phenomenon does not correspond to his Western political view. I understand what you wants to say, but I doubt that insulting someone else’s culture is a good form for any social comment.

I feel pretty comfortable saying that any social dynamic, regardless of what culture it comes from, that insists gay people are "just going through a phase" and thus their sexuality isn't real, is indeed some homophobic BS (your words, not Steve's just for the record).

Also to bring this back around, your own comment seems to imply that Japan as a monolithic culture is inherently homophobic so, y'know, glass houses and all that.

Definitely my favorite yuri series in recent years. It's not as full of tropes as other series. More importantly super low on the "forced" romance and sexual encounter scale compared to shows like NTR. It's a more genuine series I think. I agree whole heartily having an actual post high school healthy adult lesbian couple in the series is such a positive thing. The last yuri series I felt treated the characters and romance as well as BIY is doing was Whispered Words/Sasameki Koto. That series pretty much flew under the radar entirely from what I remember.

The problem is that Class S and "homosexuality is just a phase" are two different things. I know very well that Steve is a very big yuri fan and a politically active person, but this can hardly justify calling another's cultural phenomenon "bullshit" only because Japanese culture "has the audacity to" not fit the American political agenda.

Yep, Class S elements are very often used in modern Japanese media to create qeerbaiting or fanservice to bypass the open image of lesbian relationships (CGDCT shows are especially frequent victims of this), but only an ignorant person will think that this is the whole point of genre.

I would have said nothing if it was simply the result of the innocent difference between American and Japanese cultures (especially, the difference in permissible intimacy or the idealization of friendly relationship), but I can't ignore when it becomes the cause for open attacks and homophobic accusations of any authors who "don't allow their definitely gay characters to come out of the closet".

Everything I've read (admittedly, less than many) suggests that the former is built on a foundation of the latter.

So... having not watched the series yet--no Hidive--can someone clarify something? The episode reviews and readers indicated that Maki is (likely) asexual, possibly to contrast with Yuu's experiences. But this column indicates that he doesn't enter relationships because he's messed up; that not experiencing attraction is the result of committing to a delusion and an unwillingness to look inward. If that's the route the show is taking, I kinda want to avoid it. It felt uncomfortable enough reading the article.

CGDCT shows are not frequent victims of queerbaiting. It is a very rare occurrence for CGDCT shows to have male characters let alone a het relationship. The relationships in these types of shows are usually just subtext but that is different from queerbaiting. Also more recently the yuri relationships have been becoming more and more blatent not really sure it can be called subtext anymore.
