Though this story is from 2 weeks ago, it's nice to see a silent film-related thumbnail in an ANN article. It's also nice to see Ub Iwerks mentioned, who be as equal of a household name as Walt Disney. For clarification, while Walt created the personality of Mickey, Ub created the memorable image of Mickey. Also, Ub was, for practical purposes, the 3rd founder of Walt Disney Studios. Obviously, for legal reasons, Walt and Roy get that credit.

Wow, this is interesting. Might be more proof that Tezuka was influenced by Disney. But then again he did admit it. So it's not big secret. Just about everyone has been influenced by western animation. But this is really neat.

Nice to know that, outside of getting a copyright for any digital restorations or trademarks, the orig. version is likely public domain here in America. We are familiar with how Team Mickey likes using the public domain but dislikes letting their classic films, at least the orig. version of that film, enter the public domain.

Additional info: Ub, Roy, and Walt's first real success was the "Alice Comedies", a series of almost 60 live-action/animated silent shorts about the adventures of a young human girl named Alice and a Felix the Cat-knockoff called Julius the Cat (Walt's first human star and recurring cartoon characters, respectively). Four actresses played Alice. Virginia Davis (12/31/1918-8/15/2009) was in the first 15. She was only 4 when she started playing Alice.

Walt Disney was heavily influenced by the 1914 live-action/animated silent short about
"Gertie the Dinosaur", which was both the first cartoon to have a dinosaur as well the first animated character with a personality. This made her the first cartoon super-star. She was the Trope Maker of animated movies as we know it/them. Fox News namesake William Fox released the non-vaudeville version and Winsor McCay, the short's animator, is tied with Disney as the most-important people in animation. This was stated by "Looney Tunes" animator Chuck Jones but Chuck wasn't sure who should go first. So, if Disney buys out most of Fox, the contribution that Mr. Fox did on a work that influenced Mr. Disney might be undermined.
