Time for anime to finally cater to western viewers, once 2019 has the overseas market as larger than domestic.

I'll HARD pass on that. I really don't want anime to cater to a western audience, I'm fine just looking in and being a passive viewer.

I'd rather have things stay the same, I don't want anime mostly catering to the Chinese market since it will end genres such as idol anime and SoL and the Western market is a mixed bag, I would not make any anime that caters to a Western audience outside of shounen or violent seinen which are safe and will get high numbers of views (basically what is happening today), they would flop.

Yeah..People need to realize that anime is popular because it's anime. Which is Japanese. Catering to Western audiences or China audiences is NOT a good idea. It's a TERRIBLE idea.

Also that graph is extremely misleading terrible.

Look at 2003 and 2017. The bar for 2017 is almost 8 times bigger than the bar for 2003. However if we look at the numbers, 2003 was at 11,187 while 2017 was 21,527. That's not even double. Very misleading.

Welp Slice of Life is my favorite genre so I'd be depressed as hell. China's censorship is really bad as well, the amount of anime and manga/LNs that are banned in China is insane.

Plus I'm almost certain we'd never see an anime with a same sex couple since China would probably label it as propaganda. R.I.P. Yuri On Ice fans.

The fact Japan's contribution is more than literally the entire rest of the world combined tells me that's never going to happen. Even if the overseas revenue surpasses domestic overall, most of that money comes from other Asian territorials like China and Korea.

If people are seriously hoping this is going to lead to American writers in charge of the industry, they're in for a rude awakening. We'll sooner see China in charge than America.

What does "themes" mean? Subtext? Or was there an actual overt relationship? To the best of my knowledge Chinese media is in general more jumpy than Japan's in a lot of ways. Didn't a Chinese comic website almost ban homosexuality on there earlier this year? But Chinese people were like, woah woah hold on a minute there, so it didn't happen luckily. I remember there was some big deal at least.

Why should them? In this case, most of overseas market means China.

This numbers does not means much for the Japanese companies because what they look for is how many more manga/LNs and games are selling after the anime airs because that is the reason why most anime are made. Making some profit from the anime is nice but not what they are looking for when they decide to make most of these anime.

Hah. Reverse, as much as I was anticipating a western market, leeching on and doing nothing but corporate outsourcing is but a feeble foundation. Only the likes of Rooster Teeth and the creators of Avatar have the right thing going for them. Being creative and actually founding something of a local industry and creative community is the only way the States will get their anime their way.

Don't forget Johnny, a Chinese BL author is facing ten years in the gulag for just being a BL author.

They didn't divide the growth down by titles. I bet it's just a few big contracts/licenses for TV, streaming and merch (i.e the most popular shounen and other mainstream and non offensive/non-controversial titles) as opposed to very high volumes of various anime

Overseas means China, South Korea, Taiwan with US trailing those Asian countries. This has not changed since the last report

Maybe we'll finally stop getting blu-rays with locked subs.

BL novels are extremely popular in China. Mo Dao Zu Shi aired last year and was one of the most popular anime in China. (In the novel/manga they fudge and get married and adopt a child) MDZS S1 was 15 episodes and didn't even cover up until they get together so we don't know how much will be censored until S2 and S3. Probably a lot as porn is banned in China. There are 5/6 Chinese anime based on BL novels in production for 2019. The biggest ones are probably Heavens Officials Blessings and Scum Villain which are by the same author as MDZS and both have anime and manga and live action adaptations announced. When Japanese anime production adapts chinese bl though they don't have to censor as much which is a good thing. (See the BL catboy short this season which is based on a chinese manga) Scum Villain is actually a Chinese/Japanese coproduction.

I started my anime merchandise collection in 2010, so by looking at that bar graph, I can infer that the animation industry's market value has increased solely because of me.

There is nothing wrong with that graph. The baseline is 10k, not 0. It's standard practice to make graphs like this.
