Oh... oh... my god
I thought the writers weren't going to make anymore ' when then they cry' games for a while but i guess it has been some time since the umineko answer games/novels.
Good lord i don't think my heart is ready for another emotional rollercoaster, or mind.
I love all the stuff that goes down in the when then they cry series but finding out spoiler[that such a huge chunk of the story was blatantly 'fabricated' and almost all the witches were some part of Yasu's extremely hyper imagination took a while to process].
I'm pretty sure I had to scour the wiki pages to find out that info since I'm pretty dumb.

Edit: well i just watched the trailer and the god-awful art returns. Like seriously we know that there's going to an enhanced remake for console systems in the future so why not rehire the guys who did the HD graphics and make it not look like it was drawn by an amateur art student. I get that the story and atmosphere are top notch but the pudgy drawings are just unsettling. It's not like they're short on money or anytthing. Think I'll just avoid all info on this from now on until they're close to releasing the 'answer' arcs in the west and enhancing the graphics.

07th Expansion did that with Rose Gun Days and Trianthology, where Ryukishi hired some of his mangaka friends to draw a majority of the characters.

But for a When They Cry entry, I just don't think it'd be right to do that. Hiring a colorist for the nicer looking coloring and shading is one thing, but fans have wanted another true WTC with Ryukishi's own artwork and designs for a long time, and I think he understands that.

While it's true there could possibly be console ports in the future with art from a different artist (especially since Entergram has taken up the license to re-release things like Higurashi and Umineko on the latest platforms), the soul of WTC has always been in the original Comiket releases directly from 07th Expansion and drawn by Ryukishi, and it wouldn't feel right to deviate from that for this new entry, even though it's been such a long time. And Ryukishi's own artwork, as silly as it may appear to some, is one of those things that made it special.

Honestly, I love Ryukishi's art. I certainly like it more than the soulless, same-facey art they use for all the console ports.

Regardless, I'm ecstatic and hype as hell for Ciconia and more Umineko! Bring it on!

I'm sure Ryukishi's art is important to some fans, but, like Calsolum said, it's not like they're short on money, and seeing as those are just sprites that should be easy to replace, it shouldn't be at all hard to also release a version with more sophisticated graphics (I think that's the word, since his drawings are well done even if crude, and pretty is a matter of taste).
If he understands that a lot of people really want his drawings, he probably also understands that there are also plenty of people who are so put off by them that they prefer to just not play the game.
I honestly don't see a reason no to have both at this point.

You have my full attention R7. After Higanbana and Gun Rose Days I was hoping he would back to When They Cry and tie up some loose ends.

That would actually be the best idea.
Like these Ryukishi's sprites and HD sprites won't make the game 'too big'.
In this day and age the technological limitations of space, processing power, etc. are becoming less and less and while I can see Ryukishi's art being significantly smaller in filesize but that shouldn't be a problem.
I fully understand why there are people why like Ryukishi's unique art style but its really offputting and if the creators really liked his art so much why even bother 'updating' them at all?
Could it be he understands that in order to reach a wider audience he(or his publisher) needed to use an art style that wasn't so eccentric?

Publisher? What publisher? Isn't Ciconia aiming for comiket release?

Them and fans liking the artstyle dowsn't mean they can't improve it. What you're asking is change the artstyle completly in the name of improvement which isn't what they want. Putting both would be too much extra work, especially since the target audience for the pc ver. don't mind the art (already expected).

Ryukishi07 did try to hire different artists before (ryukishi's non-wtc stuff) but most of them don't receive as much as attention as WTC with its dorky art.

Like seriously, Zun's art in Touhou looks as silly as Ryukishi's yet that doesn't stop it to become one of the most popular series. Touhou don't even get console port with updated art.

I feel like a lot of people in this thread may not realize that 07th Expansion is a doujin circle.
Talking about things like "publisher" this and "wider audience" that is a complete misunderstanding of the situation, because Ciconia is going to be a Comiket doujin release just like everything else 07th Expansion produces.

If/when a professional company (likely Entergram) picks up Ciconia for a home console release, that's when there'll be discussions about a "wider audience" and new artists to make artwork exclusive to the console versions will be hired, as well as the addition of seiyuu and all that stuff. Just like with Higurashi and Umineko.

I see Ciconia no Naku Koro ni as a sign of Ryukishi trying to bring back the glory days of the circle, with a new multi-part WTC series. Drawing the characters himself is just one more facet of that. And even if that wasn't reason enough, because there's the possibility of a media mix happening again like with Higurashi and Umineko (it is a WTC after all), he wouldn't want to step on any toes by hiring a more professional artist, when that's what the console game companies would want to do. (Consider the fact that titles like Rose Gun Days and Trianthology were never picked up for home console versions by pro developers.)

That, and having two sets of sprites for every character is a waste of time. Thinking logically as a developer, you'd only choose one or the other, right? He wanted to draw them himself this time, keeping true to the WTC entries prior.
I feel like people are spoiled by MangaGamer's English releases having alternate art options just out of their generosity for fans who can be picky about the art...
