Are you sure the input is not the image on the left rather than on the right? The left image looks more like something a human would make.
So the technology adds animation to an input of a scene that only contains the 3D models of the people in the crowd?

Oops, you're right, it's the image on the left. I've corrected the sentence.

And people tell me i'm crazy when I say animators will be replaced by AI in the coming decades...

As much as I want to support the in-between animators, it's a profession (like many) that's on borrowed time as companies figure out how to automate their jobs. All this push to give animators best pay is going to do is make companies develop technology to do their job even faster. Do you want animators to have a job for longer, or do you want them to have better pay for a few years before they lose their job? That's the only two possible outcomes. It sucks, but that's capitalism for you.

Technology is kinda like blessing in disguise? Now that AI can emulate mundane repetitive tasks, animators will have to come up with unique expressions that set them apart. Computer can emulate and recognize patterns, but human mind has to break the rules and express things only that individual can do.

As for inbetween animation, it's a basically drawing practice to train animator's hand to draw precisely, not exactly creative process. Despite it's being mundane, it's still a valuable training for animators because it helps them to train their drawing hand and visual interpretation.
