This volume was just a bit more engaging than the previous two, but to be honest it is kind of a bummer that Yusagi hasn't cared to improve his villain character writing at all. I never expected them to be balls to the wall deep, but he continues to write them as cartoonishly evil as possible. at the beginning the king and princess of melromarc's douchiness was handled kind of well, but since them every antagonist has been an arrogant megalomaniac that throws tantrums, rinse and repeat. In my opinion the series was working better when the antagonism was focused on the waves themselves

An enjoyable enough volume once the party finally gets to Siltvelt; I've kinda made my peace that the author isn't going to improve his writing ability in any large measure.

One problem i'm having with both this and the previous volume is that climactic confrontations that aren't a part of the larger story seem to come out of nowhere, which make them feel exhausting. Both Fohl's fight in this volume, and the fight against spoiler[the dragon] in the previous, felt more like a distraction once things escalated to absurd amounts (but i do agree that Fohl needed some character building, and at least he finally got some).

What's helped me to feel more engaged with this series, even in the weaker volumes, were likable side characters like Kizuna. I feel like we haven't really gotten some like that recently, so hopefully things will pick up in the next volume

Have the recent volumes really gotten that bad?
