Let's see, for me the biggest plot twist of the year was finding out Asirpa's father from Golden Kamuy was spoiler[the person who stole and hid the huge fortune of gold].

tbh this was a relatively underwhelming year overall, but there was still plenty to enjoy. My top 5:
1- After the Rain 2- Hugtto! Precure 3- Devilman Crybaby 4- Planet With 5- Aggretsuko Honorable mentions: A place farther than the Universe, Run with the Wind, MHA S3, March Comes in Like a Lion S2 |

The best shows of 2018 for me were:
1. A Place Further Than the Universe: The 4 main characters had great chemistry. The show was sometimes really funny and other times really emotional. Episode 12 may have caused me to shed one manly tear, I don't admit to anything more than that. 2. Major 2nd: I'm a huge fan of the first series so it was great to see some of those characters again. It had good drama, Mutsuko was a great heroine and I liked how well all the old series characters were utilized (Kaoru was a great mom character). Hopefully it gets a 2nd season. 3. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. 2nd season: It was consistently funny and I love its cast. 4. Wotakoi: It was funny and it had cute, heart-warming moments. Narumi is possibly my favourite heroine of the year. She had a cheerful, goofy personality but she was also really mature and not completely clueless when it came to romance which was refreshing. Hirotaka was someone I couldn't help but to root for. 5. My Hero Academia season 3: The first half was amazing. If A Place Further Than the Universe had the most emotional moment of the year, then My Hero Academia had the most awesome one. The second half wasn't as good but it was still good enough to be enjoyable. There are some shows that might have gotten on my list but I have yet to see them like Attack on Titan season 3 part 1. There are a lot of honourable mentions like: Overlord (S2 & S3), Seven Deadly Sins, Ancient Magus' Bride (2nd half), Hinamatsuri, Full Metal Panic Invisible Victory, How Not to Summon a Demon Lord and some others that I'm forgetting right now. All in all, 2018 was a fantastic year for me when it comes to anime. A shit ton of shows that I really enjoyed. |

4 Devilman 3 Devilman 2 Devilman 1 Devilman Although there was a lot of good stuff this year (Banana Fish, Zombieland Saga, etc). The past three or so years, really - it doesn't feel like it was all that long ago I'd struggle to find anything interesting, and now I'm struggling to keep up. |

I'll save my Top 5 for when the full feature is out, but I did manage to finally narrow down my Top 10, so 10-6 can go here.
Honorable Mentions: Kakegurui was a ton of fun, even if it technically should be on last year's list (thanks Netflix). It was just really entertaining from start to finish, and the voice cast in both languages are *excellent* throughout. Can't wait for S2 whenever Netflix decides to let it out of limbo. ReLIFE OVA was everything I wanted after the first season. I understand the anime cut out a lot from the manga, but I'm just so happy to see the two of 'em get together. Also it wins for best musical stinger of the year Hinamatsuri was equal parts hilarious and heartwarming. It was kind of uneven in episodes so it never became an outright favorite, but it was still a standout comedy this year. Dragon Pilot: Hisone & Masotan was also pretty uneven, but I dig what it was trying to say thematically and I adore its art design. Even if the show weren't good it would deserve a mention for its faces. Rie Matsumoto's Chocolate Commercial ok listen it's the best 3-minutes of anime this year 10. Bloom Into You however was the best romance series of the year. I already liked the manga a lot, but the anime's managed to elevate it through thoughtful framing, fantastic editing, and an all around gorgeous adaptation that captures what made the source so good. The quiet yet critical moments of overflowing emotions, the thoughtful way it's handled Sayaka's story, it's just really good and I'm confident it'll end its season finale this week. 9. SSSS.Gridman was basically nothing like I expected from the first frame. I expected a loud, brash love letter to Tokusatsu, and while that was definitely part of its DNA, the show ended up way more contemplative and subdued emotionally than I ever would had guessed from a toku reboot animated by TRIGGER of all studios. Akane's arc is one of best of the year and I'm super impressed with how well the finale nailed her conclusion. 8. My Hero Academia S3 was more uneven than S2, but I knew that going in. The show nailed all of the important moments, and I loved a lot of the anime-original stuff during the exam arc, but there's still just no elevating the low stakes and inconsistent build up of the license exam. All Might vs AFO and Deku vs Bakugo V2 were absolutely fantastic though, and the movie was a blast too. Can't wait to see how Season 4 goes now that they've got a longer break. 7. Kase-san & Morning Glories is beautiful to look at, while still capturing all the humor and charm of the manga (one of my all-time favorites) and I really, really need somebody to start streaming it ASAP so I can share it with as many people as possible. 6. Gegege no Kitaro came out of nowhere to be a huge favorite. I never would have guessed from the first episode how much this show would make me laugh, tear up, or straight up applaud. Some episodes aren't hits, but when the series is batting at full strength (which is ridiculously often for this kind of show) it's some of the best viewing out there. Eat the rich, Kitaro. |

My top 5 of 2018
1. Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume o Minai Also best MC, Best heroine and Best couple, best plot. Simply the best. 2. Sword Art Online: Alicization Is SAO, so there nothing more to say why is on the top 5 3. Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu The most funny MC of 2018 and also the best cat girl 4. Kishuku Gakkou no Juliet I'm a sucker for this Rom/Com anime with lost of sugar The couple is also extremely cute 5. tl;dr: 2018 was a good year for all kinds of anime.
5. Pop Team Epic: I never got into the "talented creators get to do whatever they want" buzz of Space Dandy, but somehow that very trait is what I like most about this self-described "kuso anime". Whether it's the theatrical papercraft of Hellshake Yano, stop-motion felt puppets, or the French guy who didn't think his interviews would be in the show, this anime delighted me week after week. Also, kudos to Gabriella and Jacob for weekly reviews that really captured the show's deranged spirit. 4. Haikara-san: Here Comes Miss Modern, Part 1: It got overlooked in the hubub over theatrical releases of Mirai and Maquia, but this was a solidly entertaining two hours of classic shojo -- something we don't see nearly enough of -- that even won over my 13yo daughter who is determined not to like "girly" stuff. It's a pity that Eleven Arts has thusfar botched the release of Part II, getting it only on 11 screens (just 5 outside of California and none in Canada), when Part I was on over 100. 3. BanG Dream! Girls’ Band Party PICO: The BanG Dream! franchise seemed best forgotten after its dull-as-dirt anime, but it came back in a big way with a very fun mobile game, which in turn was bolstered by weekly shorts that play up the franchise's five main bands. By the time episode 21 duplicated the game's four-star gacha pull animation, I was ready to welcome our new mobage overlords. 2. Bloom Into You: I happened to be picking up random issues of Dengeki Daioh when it launched new yuri title, Yagate Kimi ni Naru, and was drawn to its clean, expressive artwork and appealing leads. It wasn't until it came out in English as Bloom Into You that I discovered it had a well-developed cast -- including adult same-sex couple role models, finally! -- and wanted to do more than just have silly girl crushes go nowhere. Most of what I like in the anime comes from the source material, but I never imagined it would look as good in motion as it does. 1. Kakegurui: Case study in why I watch mostly anime. Do I want do-overs of movies from my youth, costumed heroes punching one another, or an unnecessary origin story for Han Solo? Or would I rather have (LOOKS AT INDEX CARD) "insane lesbian gambling addicts"? Kakegurui is the kind of show that reminds me why I watch anime, that it came seemingly out of nowhere, not motivated by cynical nostalgia or a hot trend, but out of someone's desire to combine implausibly short skirts with even more implausible ultra high-stakes gambling. I think this is also more of a stealth hit than is realized, and that while the ANN editors and anitwitter cognoscenti spent the winter talking about Devilman Crybaby, this is the Netflix-exclusive anime that people were actually watching. Because let me tell you, I saw a lot of Kakegurui cosplay at cons this year (ACen, Otakon, AWA, and Youmacon). |
