I'm guessing it's safe to assume that they will have subs for Phoenix, right? I'll be checking out the manga first but I may eventually pick this one up.

I'll believe it when I see it, haven't watched Phoenix myself but seeing it's from 2004 has me wondering if it was on digipaint or not.

I guess with it having a dub, the release won't be hardsubbed like Strawberry Panic's SD Blu-ray was.

I would advise to stay far away from anything Media Blaster releases. Any company that releases a DVD with DVD-R discs can go to hell. They are unplayable on a dvd or bluray player. Also more often then not tehy screw up what is supposed to be on the discs. ..

^That's only with DVD, their Blu-ray releases uses pressed discs and other than Strawberry Panic and Kite Uncut, there have been no reported issues with their BDs so far.

It wasn't until last week I found out this show was streaming in high-definition in Japan, and that it seemed to be native HD (or 540p at least). I'll be sure to buy this BD release.

Aw, I was hoping the manga would get a reprint. Darn. This is okay too.

Oh nice. This was a pretty good attempt to handle Phoenix stories that weren't already covered by the 80s OAVs. Since it alternates between past and future stories, it also captures that aspect of the Phoenix manga. I grabbed the DVDs when they were getting scarce, and had previously bought it dub-only when it was on iTunes, so I don't know if I'm going to triple-dip.

This should've been broadcasted in HD back when it was originally made, which makes the "New Transfer" comment really strange. A lot of NHK productions were in HD late 90s, early 00s (good example is Mujin Wakusei Survive, a 4:3 show produced in HD in 2003). Tsubasa Chronicles was also HD, but for whatever reason, a number of countries didn't get the HD masters (I think the Chinese market was one of the few regions to get it), for reasons I'm not sure on.

Sure, but all things considered, I have VCDs of shows that were clearly recorded on someone's VCR that have fewer "issues" than that Strawberry Panic release. Laughing

I'm usually just amazed when they're not announcing another borderline hentai (or full hentai) these days.

*sigh* Things like remind me that they used to have SO many hidden gems back in the day. Twelve Kingdoms, Simoun, I'd love to see these back in print.

So that is the bird statue in front of the Osamu Tezuka manga museum:

They'd be coming from another company and probably only if the license was cheap and they had an HD transfer available.

I would pick up Simoun again if it were available in HD. Beautiful music on that show and gorgeous visuals.

MB had a lot of good stuff back in the day but the switchover to DVD-R sure hasn't helped their reputation. I really don't get it, either. It's just not a durable format for video. Pressed is MUCH better but there are issues with pressed discs nowadays.

They're literally down to 1 or 2 major plants doing replication for virtually all the major home video releases in North America -- we're talking both DVD and Blu ray.

It's not such a big secret that Hollywood WANTS physical media to eventually die out and force all films to be bought digitally AND viewed digitally streaming, cable, etc.
They don't like the process of creating discs and shipping these things out to stores or warehouses even if they still make more money on sales of individual discs than they do digital download.
If you've noticed, Disney has been doing a half-assed job on its back-catalog titles for years on Blu ray and DVD. They are NOT made with the care and packed with the extras that used to be the norm for regular titles. Sure, prestige titles (ie, money makers and new from theater) get extras but a lot of the Blu ray releases have literally just been the film on the disc and no extras, and even a few of those films NEVER got a good hi-def remaster (The Sword in the Stone; might be an upscale from the old DVD master).

This past Christmas, several titles got delayed to stores and it was HARD to find some things in stores and there were limited copies of new titles like 2001: A Space Odyssey in 4K because they always rush out new titles at the end of the year for Christmas sales. That crush was partly due to the lack of replication capability in North America.

More bad news --
THey're producing fewer models of players in the market -- literally only THREE announced models of 4K BLu ray players for this year.
4K Blu ray has NOT been anywhere near as successful as Blu ray let alone DVD at its peak in the mid-2000s
There are some pundits that believe physical movie media might be dead by 2025.
They already don't make 3D HDTV sets anymore for the North American market AND there are very Blu ray 3D titles. That's more of a European thing.

I had enough trouble finding a physical copy of Simoun OST 2 (only seen it twice in secondhand stores, both times at full new price).

Would some kind of crowd-funding process be appropriate for titles such as this?
It would be great to get extra content like interviews with those responsible for the title while they are still around.

Absolutely! I'd probably put it in my "top five" favorite shows (although I'd understand if it ended up not being the sort of thing that most anime fans would be interested in these days).

First, holy shit, Media Blasters is alive!

It's native HD as one can tell from Amazon streams and looks really good so I'll definitely be getting these to replace my old Phoenix dvds. I just hope MB releases this in a timely manner and don't keep delaying it.
