You're far more generous to this series than I am. It was by far the most boring thing I watched that season, and the CGI only made it worse. It's telling that the most memorable moment is the joke it played on the audience by spoiler[wasting two episodes on Snake's and Dragon's backstories and then offing Dragon not four minutes after.]

I liked this one quite a bit more than most people, mostly because of what I like from Nisio: really interesting characters. I feel like there was a theme going on with the characters feeling templates sort of, with scumbags, people who were good but have fallen off, and paragons. It's been too long for me to remember much of it, but I liked the character relationships we got and how Monkey and Ox affected those around them. The action I felt was either stellar (like in episode 1) or terrible (Snake and Dragon, some of the CG on the stream release - were there any upgrades on the animation in comparison btw?). I really liked the OP from the show as well, but most people seemed to like the ED instead, which is a wrong opinion.

Anyway I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who's not already a fan of Nisio or maybe fantasy battle royales.

This was an outstanding anime. I really like that fact that each episode gave us a little back ground of the characters. Definitely one of my favorites

I tried to get into this show as I liked the premise and the cool action scenes, but I ended up having the same problem with Juni Taisen that I did with Magical Girl Raising Project in that it became entirely too predictable which characters were going to die. But Magical Girl Raising Project made up for that problem by having an interesting cast of characters whereas with Juni Taisen all the characters I was interested in were killed off too early in the show and I ended up dropping it. I might still go back and rewatch it at some point but it's not a high priority rewatch for me.

I tapped out of the series early, but I did watch some of the reaction videos of the actors when Vic Mignogna was putting them on Facebook (Monica Rial's and Stephanie Young's were especially hilarious) so I would almost buy the set off those alone.

I watched the entire series and I thought it was ok, it was fine, not spectacular but I liked how everyone got an episode and story to them.

I thought this series was pretty clever with its subversive and almost parodic take on several elements of the battle royale genre.

It really knew its identity and played with it in quite the unexpected Nisio way (ironically turning the tale into some kind of premise analysis instead of an unpredictable death road, in a way it was basically so predictable you couldn't just say it was not on purpose... then comes the end of it).

Nisio loves experimenting like this on new genres and concepts, and this is a quite enjoyable one in my opinion. Still, his style and presentation are not for everyone most of the time, so I can't blame anyone for finding this boring or unwatchable.

A high 7/10 from me, pretty underappreciated anime.

When I seen Juuni Taisen over a year ago, I got the sense it was going to be more spectacle than any substance from its very first episode with its gritty mood, some of the characters hard to take seriously with their attires, and relishing in the violent encounters between the Zodiac Warriors. The attempts at back story mostly existed as window dressing to give an excuse for why each of them were fighting as the storytelling wasn't deep enough for me to give a hoot about the characters beyond whatever over-the-top abilities they had to fight. The show's fun enough to watch at least once, but doesn't offer much in rewatchability as its plotting is straightforward enough when the sole survivor of the competition is revealed and the characters aren't deep enough where it would be worth seeing again.

I enjoyed this. But I never finished. Maybe I'll go back and watch it again.

But really, does a psychotic killer who looks like a buff male stripper actually need a background story to be interesting?

He doesn't need a backstory to be interesting, but you can be sure as hell the backstory itself would also be crazy interesting.
