Is it just me, or is CMX pulling an ADV and overloading on titles just for the sake of boosting their portfolio??

Probobly considering most of their titles are pretty unknown. DC isn't exactly known for learning from their or other companies mistakes quickly (or ever).

They said they've learned their lesson & from now on if they have reservations about a title, they just won't license it. They also are aiming for shorter titles-not 20-30 volumes, so there's turn-over. (Comments made suggest they aren't sure they're going to release all of Eroica-something like 30 volumes) Sword of the Dark Ones was only 3 volumes. Tenryu is ending with the next volume, I believe, so there are holes opening up in their release schedule. Seimaden is up to vol 5 & is only about 9 volumes, I believe according to ANN's encyclopedia. 8 new titles sounded about right. I know I asked about a couple titles I love & both are 11-14 volumes so, being about half-way thru that, they'll have more room in their schedule.

They actually sounded pretty cautious. Yes, right off the bat, someone had to scream about Tenjyo Tenge. Del Rey made a similar comment to CMX's about not changing rating mid-stream so Tenjyo Tenge is pretty well stuck. (Del Rey commented Gatcha Gatch continued with Vol 6 in Japan with an all new cast & a rather more mature story, so they re-started with #1 & a more mature rating.) Del Rey is also altering their Oh Great title, so it's not just CMX--Del Rey is uncomfortable with the cover of Vol 2 (Air Gear, I believe. I could care less about Oh Great & Peach Pit si it sort of flew over my head-I did make a not but it's too hot to go thru all my bags right now after 5 days of sleep-deprivation & eating junk.) Del Rey is putting leggings on the girl because she is one the cover(they swear they won't touch the inside). Viz has also re-touched stuff. Do you think Japanese companies think twice about changing stuff they release?

I was afraid of that, what with the six month wait scheduled between volumes. It's my favorite title from CMX, so I don't suppose you could elaborate? If I recall correctly, Eroica originally ran in the seventies and eighties up to volume nineteen, went on hiatus for years, then resumed publication in the nineties. Did they indicate whether they seemed committed to all nineteen or so volumes from it's original run, or if they were planning on dropping the title completely?

I asked about yaoi since Eroica & Seimaden are in that vein. NO YAOI. Eroica is humor in their eyes. No comment on Seimaden(it is a side-plot-the lead is solidly hetero. It's his main flunky who's a bt more devoted to Laures then usual). The one guy on the panel loves Eroica, it was their main editor who commented on not being sure they'll release it all in connection to their wanting to stick with shorter titles vs longer titles so it's more they won't guarantee all the Eroica volumes will come out because it is long, not that it's doing poorly. All this seems related to the reception on Tenjho Tenge & the state of the manga market in general. Viz made a big tadoo about FINALLY ending Ranma 1/2-that they all used to estimate how long it would take(2017), but that InuYasha is still running-yeah (I joked with my daughter ages ago InuYasha will still be coming out when I retire in a dozen yrs or so thanks to Viz's release schedule). It feels like CMX is committed to doing manga, but they want to be able to cut their losses quickly should a title do poorly or the manga market vanishes or DC cuts them loose.

So, basically, it's not a title they'd likely liscence now, and they're willing to drop it if continuing becomes economically unfeasible, but they're not planning on dropping it? Thanks, that's good to know.

In spite of the Ten Ten fiasco (it's a title I wouldn't have bought anyway), I'm actually quite fond of CMX. In addition to Eroica I pick up Tower of the Future, Moon Child, and Pieces of a Spiral, and am interested in Swan, Cipher, Seimaden, and Young Magician. I guess I'm inclined toward midlist shoujo. If long series are in danger of getting axed though, maybe I should give serious thought to picking up Swan sooner rather than later...
