frist psot.

I mean, I am very happy that studio wit put the humane story in the forefront, which might make the anime the preferred medium compared to the manga.

This is probably my favorite of the summer season so far. It's cool that we got three episodes all at once but how long do we have to wait for episode 4? Sad

I’m glad the fourth episode isn’t until the 28th of July. It gives me time to catch up on the manga.

I love the OP and ED.

This series is my absolute favorite work of fiction. I re-read the manga in its entirety at least three times a year. And for me it gets better every-time. So I'm pretty glad its adaptation is good so far.

Yeah very strong start, I'm assuming there'll eventually be more fighting scene and I hope the animation can stay strong during those bought too.

It's obvious that the show will look into the foolish idea of going to war and such (represented by young thorfin) but I hope it also recognize that Thor idea are just as foolish and a middle ground need to be struck between "I'll kill all my enemy" and "there are no enemy".

Also I hope that the opening didn't spoil the story, spoiler[it distinctively look like Thor is going to get killed but he'll plead for his attacker not to kill Thorfin so they'll recruit him into there band but he'll be bitter the entire time and will try to kill the leader all the time but won't be good enough for it until he eventually is and so on.]

Meiam: Whether or not that turns out to be accurate, know at least that you haven’t had the entire story spoiled.

The OP doesn't even "spoil" the entire prologue. Wink

James Beckett seems to put a lot of emphasis on Thors going to play a major role spoiler[but in terms of the whole story he's a side note, playing an EXTREMELY important part in terms of character motivations and growth yes, but still, in terms of this story, you can consider him the 'doomed hometown' of your average Japanese rpg protagonist...]

I took my time getting around to the 2nd and 3rd episodes, knowing there'd be a wait for the 4th, but it was worth the wait. I really like Thors, and I like how he doesn't need to say a lot to still be able to see what's going on behind the wall. Don't really care for Thorfinn so much, but that's just me not liking little kids that age much (even when I was that age), because he's a pretty realistic portrayal. Hopefully, I'll warm up to him as he gets older.

I know it wasn't supposed to be funny, but I did get a chuckle out of "Wait, there's fewer houses than before..." <crash> "Oh, that's where they went."

Reading an offhand comment while reading the latest chapter of Vinland Saga made me learn something I wasn't remotely aware of, despite following this for so long and having all the translated books so far, and even after at one point trying to figure out the exact time period the story takes place. That...

Thorfinn is based on a factual historical person.

How the heck did I miss THAT all this time? Shocked
Wiki: Thorfinn Karlsefni
(Warning, that wiki page is a major SPOILER for later developments, and even for some of the earlier ones, and if you follow the related links to the other sagas, you'll get to know who some of the upcoming characters will be based on as well...)

I stumbled upon Thorfinn's identity while looking for information on Vinland. Problem is, he was reportedly born in 980 which would put him in his early twenties when the events in Vinland Saga take place. Worse, he was thought to have died around 1007 or so. Literary license, I guess.

I do wonder if by killing Askeladd they could have gotten away with no deaths. Archers were still above them and I think it is likely that they would have just started to shoot because they were pissed off. We know that Askelads men respected him, they were no huge on honor and that they were in a place where Thors could not have reached them.

The man stood by his principles until the very end, and his willingness to let Askeladd live proved to be his undoing – sure, if he'd just cut off Askeladd's head, it's likely that he and the other villagers would have just been killed anyway, but Thors' death is nonetheless framed as a tragedy. If Thors had been willing to meet Askeladd on his own terms and just kill the man, Thorfinn might still have a father.

For me it was clear that Askeladd wanted to do better but was also with his hand tied. The most he could do was honor his word to release Thors' men. Thors won the duel and got what he wanted.

Seeing as Thorfinn is the true main character of a story that's only just begun

Not at all. If anything this entire season will very strongly be focused on the beastly Askeladd.
