Ugh, no Macs, no Linux, no portable devices, heavy DRM. Hard to imagine this is going to get very far.

Portable devices matter. No offense to these superior products, but Macs and Linux don't matter when it comes to consumerism, and consumers don't care about DRM (look at iTunes). $4.99 for a single, dub only episode ? That's going to be the limiting factor. How many fans are willing to pay a similar price to what they pay per episode for a DVD for lower quality (although not significantly), dub only, unpackaged media with no extras ? -t |

Five freakin' dollars an episode, and it's still dub-only? Are you guys insane, ADV? I don't see who this is going to appeal to, especially if the customer can't even stick it on an iPod or PSP or other similar device. It's stuff like this that reinforces my belief that ADV is completely out of touch with the market.

Sure, $4.99 for a dub episode is a bit of a stretch but for a movie that you can get on DVD (online retail) for the same price is crazy... |

I think in this case the DRM will matter. Notice these files can only be played on a maximum of 3 PC's that the user "associates" with them. You can't copy and play at will. And if something happens to the file or you get a new computer, bye-bye file. It might as well just be a long term rental that's only good for the life of your PC. |

I sure as heck am not. $5 for one dub only episode is just plain crazy! Movie rentals are cheaper. Hell ANY other legal way to get anime is cheaper or at least more cost effective. Who do they think is going to go for this? What exactly is their target market and goal with this? I would have thought it was a way to try out episodes. Sort of an advanced marketing machine that pays for itself. However the price implies they are trying to start this service as a real profit generator instead of a marketing tool. FYI before someone says I'm nuts Profit is fine and dandy. I am not saying anime companies shouldn't make money. I'm just saying they aren't going to make money with this. |

At the panel they mentioned that the current prices would more than likely change. Also they mentioned that feedback was very much needed by people.

here's my take...
if you're going to charge $5 for 22 minute long video, then add option to download ipod or psp format...and have duo audio with subtitles just like a DVD... otherwise, the service will never take off and people will say it's crazy to download so little with so much money.... and for $3, you can rent a DVD these days....and for $20 a month, you can get unlimited online rental.... |

I cannot see what the point is here. 4 bucks an episode is what people are already paying and that includes two language tracks, extras and a case. This is just bizzare any way you look at it.

I would have paid the $5 to try out Gilgamesh, a series I'm kinda curious about, but as you said, portable devices matter. I'd want to put this on my iPod then plug it into the TV, as I don't really like watching TV/movies on the computer. My primary machine is a Mac, too, so even if I wanted to, I can't watch it on that either. Hopefully they'll release something that supports iPod soon. |

Well game over for me.....then again I am a netflix user and that still the way for me get my anime that I don't buy. Although I wish the anime selection was a little bigger I am still happy with that. |

I like a lot of the titles ADV has brought out over the years, but these prices and restrictions are a slap in the face compared to what I pay now and what I get for my money. I'll be renting or buying DVD's for years to come if this is the best they can do.
Digitial downloads should be cheaper for them to provide and the discount should be passed along to the consumer. If they can't or are unwilling to do that then they can kiss my money goodbye. |

or cheaper if one looks around a bit. atleast with Itunes if I wanted to buy a movie its cheaper to do it that way then say oh drive to Walmart and pick it up. I know anime is a niche market but damn 5 bucks for a Dub only episode vs 20 a dual audio dvd yeah it may be the same price per episode but I get the dual audio and some extra's for the most part. As to DRM and Itunes atleast with the music you can burn it off to a audio cd I dont know about the video's becouse I dont use Itunes for video but have gotten a couple of the free singles of the week of Itunes that and back when pepsi had there free song promo. |

They really should make it possible for the user to burn their purchases to DVD. As mentioned above, iTunes allows it for CDs. While the DRM present on DVDs isn't as strong as what is now possible with digital downloads, it's not like they don't sell most/all of their shows on DVD anyway.
Furthermore, how much more bandwidth would it really take to add a Japanese language audio track? Some of us actually care about that. |
