Excellence in publishing?
I wonder what they've been smoking, Viz' release of Naruto is below par.

Besides, we all know One Piece should've won it.

BELIEVE IT.

No seriously, how is it "Below par"? I'm eager to hear. I consider it above average, given what everyone was expecting.

Well something just lost all respect. I guess it's to be expecting when people associate Fun Home with the recent library-censorship controversy and its lesbian author.

The award was given based on the results of an Internet poll of a selection of top-selling Graphic Novel titles that anyone could vote for as many times as they wanted, provided they cleaned out their cookies in between votes.

I had little doubt that Naruto fans would emerge as the top ballot-stuffers.

That explains a lot then.

This is rich, all the "oh, this should have won it... " etc etc

The fact that a manga won it, be happy. It's a first. How this translates into market share and increased exposure should be the primary focus. This is an "industry qualified 'consumers choice' program"

So if your favorite, highly qualified "because you like it" manga isn't even being considered it's because 1. it's not Industry Qualified and 2. it's not a consumer's choice. Sorry Charlie, your tuna isn't up to snuff.

Ah yes, the "they stuffed it" or "it's flawed" Nope, who ever has the largest army wins.

At least be encouraged that a manga is making waves and the anime/manga market is developing further.

Get your thumb out of your mouth, wipe those tears and Grow UP Please. It's like some people just live to bitch.

Ahh~? I seem to remember voting in that poll; wasn't an FMA one of the choices? Bah, well, if we're lucky, Viz won't trumpet around this "award" as if it were something meaningful.

Nope. The competition was Hellsing vol. 7 and some non-manga graphic novels. It's a populist consumer vote and the most popular title won. Don't be sour losers over this. It is a big deal for Viz.

So just because a manga won the award we should just shut up and disreguard our opinions? What kind of an award is it if they don't even bother to restrict people from casting multiple votes? Personally I could care less who wins this award, even if it is a title that I feel is ho-hum, but what's the point of having an awards ceremony with criteria like this? Not much of a "honor" to manga other than showing the devotion of the fans. And honestly, if you don't want to hear people whine and bitch, don't log onto a forum.

Naw, folks are going to do it anyway, no matter where you are. I get accussed of it sometimes also. I just found it interesting that an award was presented that gains exposure for the industry as a whole (A rising tide lifts all boats) and I see folks belly-aching about it being "stuffed" and it didn't include their title. It's exposure that benifits anime as a whole, not just Naruto (and Hellsing). Maybe a few people decided to check out the titles that won, new people getting interested in anime. Unless there's not enough room for n00bs, aye?

So they didn't meet your standard for an award, well do something about it, if you can. Build something better.

BTW, I think Naruto is just so so, and FMA is worthless. But even if a title won that I don't care about, I still think the exposure is good for the whole.

Big deal for Viz, huh. I just hope its not too big a deal; what if they start putting 'award winning' on that volume (in an obnoxious sorta way)? I'm sure they won't, but its still kinda scary to think about.

Why would that be obnoxious? Unless they're putting it in every page corner or right in the middle of the book, I think such a marketing is perfectly legitimate.

"Award Winning" always has a good feel to it; whether it's deserving or what award it receives, however, are different issues as far as they're concerned.

Well, it is legitimate to do such a thing and it is probably a smart thing to do; its just that when there's an award winning emblem on a cover of a book( not just with GNs) its messes with the cover art, imo. If they put it on the back, then I would have no problem, but then it would defeat the purpose of putting it on in the first place. I guess it's just a weird little idiosyncrasy of mine Wink .

Parading the award due its popularity is one thing, but to state something of the likes of Naruto as being a standard of excellence that all types similar to it should reach is idiocy.

I'm a bit confused as to how this would be anywhere near as effective as the Naruto anime being aired on Cartoon Network. So a grossly popular manga wins the award, what does that say about it? It's popular. While I know that the likelihood of something more deserving taking away an award in a showcase like this is unlikely, I still wouldn't mind be surprised.

I'd wager that Viz'll be waving this around as if Naruto won an Eisner.

As I mentioned above, I wouldn't care if they were to say that Naruto won due to its popularity and support from its fanbase, but to slap the label of "excellence" on it is insulting.

Don't bring it the whole "Well, why don't you do something better?" argument into this. That never works and serves as nothing more than a meaningless retort.
