I really wanted this anime, but the price frightened me. I wish they'd knock it down a few pegs, $135 is a bit much.

I really don't think the show can be considered a success as far educational point of view is concerned. Most of the depiction involved are only accurate on the most superficial of elements and the major aspect of the show are flat out wrong. For example one of the major defining characteristic, the only one really, for red blood cell (the main character) is that she's constantly lost... this makes no sense whatsoever since red blood cell have no destination, they just circulate at random, delivering oxygen when they pass upon area where it's needed. A particular egregious case is (light spoiler) spoiler[cancer depiction, shown as an oppressed minority when it's anything but that]. In the end the only educational aspect is that the show throw fancy scientific name around, but I'd wager less than 2% of people who watched the show could even name most of the foreign pathogen and the body defence mechanism that feature prominently in the show after watching it.
Otherwise the show is not a particularly interesting monster of the week. It's fairly repetitive, with more than half of the episodes strictly following the formula (monster show up, new defence mechanism is introduce, monster is killed). There is some attempt at developing the character, including some awkward attempt at a love story, but they never amount to much. I'd give it an A+ for concept, but a C- for execution. If someone want a far better example, watch "Once Upon a Time... Life", despite being decades older, it's far more educational. Yea, this is the sort of anime that some high school biology teachers may want to play during free time or something, for fun educational value. Yet Aniplex doesn't offer a cheaper Dvd option for mass market (while still offering a Dvd in Japan), the bluray is exclusive to Rightstuf, and the dub is not streaming anywhere, and would have to be purchased for over $30 on iTunes. A certain Australian retailer is selling some region B Aniplex blurays with a buy 1 get 1 free sale, I might get Cells at Work from there, since it would cost me less than $30 to get it on bluray.

I had fun watching this. It reignited my desire to gain more Biology knowledge, which is something I kept saying I would do but was putting it off due to the time requirement.

Not sure if it had the dub, but I think Microsoft had it for 30 bucks. Since I was also trying to find alternate ways to afford it too. |

Yeah, it looks like it's being released by both MVM in the UK and Madman in Australia. Nothing like pulling an end-around on absurd pricing. |

I strongly recommend watching this series of commentaries from UK doctor Ed Hope where he presents the medical background for the various episodes of Cells at Work. He dispenses with the sickle cell theory pretty quickly. Hope is also consistently impressed with the scientific accuracy of this series.
