RIP. I know that no one particularly likes the DEEN anime, but I found it a fine entry point to the franchise (even though I started with Zero).

May those CGI dragons and dolphins take him to the other side (even if they're of the kind that was subject to memes ever since the 2006 Fate/stay night anime came out).

Here's hoping he is reborn as a Caster class servant. Anime hyper
But in all seriousness, I wish his family, friends, and co-workers, my sincerest condolences. It's a shame because I was one of those people who actually loved Severing Crime Edge and thought it deserved a sequel.

I am also one of the people who liked Ufotable/stay night more. The passing of the Deen/stay night anime director is still a big loss to the Fate fandom. Rest in peace

From what I recall, DEEN was the go to studio back then for making VN adaptions on a shoestring. I don’t blame the director for not being provided the resources to make a KyoAni-level KEY adaptation. It is probably thanks to him utilizing cg and knowing where to cut corners that it didn’t turn out as bad as some erotic/ecchi adaptions back then. I remember ones that started with great animation but whose later episodes degraded quickly into a narrated slideshow. Totally agree that it was a good entry point/ad for the franchise, which I suspect was TM’s primary objective at the time.

Edit: I may be off a few years, but I definitely recall my girlfriend at around that time complaining that it seemed like DEEN was making all her fujoshi shows and the usual complaint about quality. I remember she showed me the slideshow in one which I thought was hilarious.

IMO, he was the guy responsible for influencing the portrayal of action scenes in all Fate media (and later Ufotable works in general).

I vividly remember that action scenes using such quick cuts (that showcased the supernatural capabilities of the Servants) were not a thing before DEEN's adaptation of FSN. Those kinds of cuts weren't bad back then since they at least made the action so much better than what the Tsukihime anime had.

Condolences for all his families and friends.

ya nailed it. The pretty iconic UBW attack in the VN was far less than the DEEN TV Anime. And while the UBW movie moved at a breakneck speed, Deen actually...tried. I tend to dislike the studio and I scream inside whenever they touch something I like...but overall they did a swell, and overall beneficial job. I'd comment on Tsukihime...but I cannot ever clear more than an episode.

RIP Yamaguchi-san. Thank you for all the works you helped spearhead as a director, and for helping make the anime that got me into the Fate franchise.

Plus it also comes with a fact that Deen anime also was first to introduce it's solid seiyuu cast (OG VN got the same one only year later with PS2 non-ero release) that all current Fate related series and media still use pretty much unchangeable - unlike Tsukihime where most of it's modern voice cast comes from Melty Blood instead.

I totally forgot about the cast.

I remember how the opening of 2006 anime really got me, with the way they portrayed Sakura softly whispering for Shirou to wake up. I think that moment was well done and really got me into liking the character.

The Deen Fate was my introduction to the series and I think it did a good job with what they had to work with at the time. It wasn’t as flashy as UFOtable but it still had a pleasing art style and I still liked the story and characters. Yamaguchi also directed Angel Links which I know isn’t as well liked among Outlaw Star fans, but I personally liked the adventures of Meifong and her crew and magical bat mascot that turns into a sword and it had some interesting ideas in the later half of the show. Yamaguchi also did episode director work for Suite Precure and Smile Precure. Smile is one of the few Precure titles to get a US release through the Glitter Force dub and it was one of my first Precure shows besides the original one.
