I gotta admit it was kind of unexpected to see another FE character, I thought all the DLC characters would be from 3rd parties. However, it seems that Sakurai and his team tried to make Byleth more interesting by giving him/her the ability to use other weapons apart from swords (The part where Sothis acknowledged the overabundance of swordfighters was great).
Apart from this reveal all the characters in the first pack have been pretty unexpected. My favourites are Terry, Banjo, Joker, the Hero and Byleth in that order.
If I had to choose any characters for the next pass, I would add Heihachi from Tekken, Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, Master Higgins from Adventure Island and Dante from Devil May Cry. I can't think of any female fighters to include. 2B from NieR is one of the most popular female characters right now, but she doesn't have a game appearance in Nintendo platforms, at least Joker and Cloud had one before appearing in Smash.

I'm expecting 2b and Dante in the second pass. Steve? will be a Mii costume, seems like the best way to represent Minecraft (also means it won't be another Gunner!)

Hey, I got Terry Bogard, so as far as I'm concerned the next fighter can be the Michelin Man and I'll still be happy.

I would go Banjo, Joker, Terry, Hero, Byleth myself. I like Hero and I play him a lot but I feel his inclusion is barebones compared to the other dlc fighters. It's better than what Cloud got at least.

*Max's disappointment intensifies* Laughing

I assumed Byleth would be the first DLC fighter since they've been reping each new Fire Emblem game here. Didn't think they'd skip out on the best selling, most recent one so I was always ancitcipating him being announced at some point.

Although I was kind of thinking/hoping it'd be a Zelda/Shiek/Pokemon Trainer thing where you could transform between the 3 different Lords with their different fighting styles, but I guess they kinda did my idea by letting Byleth use all their relic weapons.

Wasn’t this leaked months ago when the previous male voice for Byleth said he was going to be in voicing Byleth in smash which was one of the myriad reasons of them being fired?

Yay, this was inevitable to be sure.

Perhaps, but it's hard to say whether he actually knew or he was just expressing wishful thinking since Robin and Corrin were in Smash. The latter is likely what everyone took it as.

For classic video game history on Nintendo, there really should be some of these in the next set:

-Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden (blue version)
-Arthur from Ghosts N Goblins
-Strider Hiryu from Strider
-Nathan "Rad" Spencer from Bionic Commando
-Bill Rizer from Contra

Add those to what's there and I've got a true dream team of video game characters in Smash.

There really are 8 of these crappy FE blobs in Smash. I like FE just fine and played all games (due to remakes) but more than 2 is overkill.
RIP Dante. Your party got canceled.

To be fair sakurai seems to give zero fucks about the game's competitive scene and seems to be actively ignoring the negative opinions of fans.
Good for him.
I loved using Hero for all of half an hour as my playgroup all whined and cried over how broken he was. Never liked dragon quest or the design of hero *cough* no female version *cough* but he was silly fun. I do agree he was broken though.
My only disappointment with Byleth is that he doesn't have a counter, well I suppose Sakurai tried to make him different, but Robin was my least used FE on account of how slow they were, hearing sakurai describe byleth as lacking and 'a bit better than robin' does not fill my with optimism. I doub't they'll actually be 'fun' to play unless their moves are really bonkers.
Ah well guess I'll find out when I play them.

......I mean if Ryu of street fighter didn't go back to his red headed white head band design don't know why they'd put Ryu in his classic costume by default, maybe as an alt.

I know it's a dream list but that's 3 capcom characters on top of two already in the game and 4 of those guys have already appeared in some crossover titles.

I think the big difference there is when people think of Ryu, nobody thinks of that - everybody thinks of the Ryu as defined by Street Fighter II Ryu. As in, SNES millions seller Street Fighter II Ryu.

That said, it's convenient how that's basically the same Ryu we have now, and yeah, I don't know if Koei Tecmo would want, errr, THEIR Ryu to be primarily in the blue pajamas - it's the Nintendo classic, but not what they're selling now. I guess that might also depend on whether or not there's a new Ninja Gaiden by then, and what he wears in that.
