That's interesting/odd as I don't believe the 4th OVA is available legally in english anywhere (and most importantly on crunchyroll).

Yes, OVA4 is still not licensed by anyone though Funimation released Ai Tenchi Muyo on Blu Ray last year. I'm not sure what it means for Funimation's license of the Tenchi franchise that Crunchyroll has licensed OVA5 seemingly without Funimation's involvement as far as we know thus far. Funimation has the license for all the previous Tenchi titles sans OVA4 though their streaming rights for GXP have expired but I believe they still have the home video rights to it.

Well, that came out of nowhere. A very interesting and unexpected pickup for Crunchyroll. I'd be nice if they can get the 4th OVA too, but we can't complain too much since it was starting to look unlikely that any of these new OVAs would see an English release.

I wonder if Funimation does have the rights to OVA 4 and 5 and this is a prelude to an announcement at Sakuracon or Anime Boston.

Apparently it is not available in Crunchyroll South Korea.

I have long lost faith in the direction (if you could even call it that) Kajishima decided to take these beloved characters (and I still argue nobody is missing anything with Season 4), yet even as I genuinely feel this I knew in the back of my mind I was still going to at least check out this new season if there was a way to do so--then I read this oddly/pleasantly surprising news. Guess I'll be waiting until May/June to restart my one-month Crunchyroll subscription so I can watch this new story in one go.

The real issues is that the ryo-ohki verse (that is the ova universe) keeps adding characthers from the gxp novels without much introductionand straight to it, Ova 3 was not a problem as the gxp anime adapted loosely all the characthers that were introduced back than but the later ova introduced all these new characthers that are in the gxp novels but where not in the original gxp anime as that series was alraedy different from the anime and is now far ahead.

So for fans that watched the western version when they were younger or new ones will feel to much overwhelmed as well as out of touch with the story unless you read the original books but outside of japan that is impossible.

I just hope this time they might take the western fandom who are not able to read the books into consideration when they make this.

Absolutely this. For me, watching the first ep was 90% "Strange women sit and BS a lot, while characters I recognize go by in the background once or twice each. Tenchi says maybe 20 words, and leaves at one point."

Pardon my sarcasm, but it needs to copy Legend of the Galactic Heros and give everyones name and rank in the subtitles so I can have a clue what the hell is going on.

Besides the issues with these OVAs that others have pointed out, (and someone can correct me if I have incorrect information), but it seems Kajishima is pretty much just building towards the end-game he's already established in the innumerable doujinshi he's published over the years. There's a bit of actual lore and story stuff sprinkled throughout those, but they're mostly spoiler[just weird (and sometimes ick) sex fantasies starring Tenchi as he marries literally all of the girls (including the freaking space ship Rolling Eyes) and bones them. Then the family dynamic gets even weirder when all of his kids marry all of GXP protagonist Seina's kids. He might become king of Jurai in there somewhere. Maybe. But that's pretty much it, unless Kajishima changed his tune over the last few years.]

Fortunately, he restrains himself a bit (or the studio/publisher restrains him) when he's working on actual anime releases and published works instead of his self-published stuff. I don't hate all of Kajishima's stuff, especially the older things, but if we ever get to a point where an adaptation of his weirder dojinshi is announced, I'm done with this franchise.

Personally, I would've preferred Negishi to stay at the helm of the franchise after Ai Tenchi. He's mentioned his desire to continue the Tenchi Universe/movie timeline a few times over the years. That would be much more palatable (not to mention accessible) than whatever Kajishima has cooking.

Can’t speak for anyone, but I want to see if this is going to weird sexy fun or is it going to be weird squick unfun. It certainly has a place, but I kind of rolled my eyes at the lingering and focused camera gaze on a breastfeeding scene not even 30 seconds in. I think I’ll wait, too, to see what the bigger picture looks like before continuing. I mean I realize this is TM and what that means, but still.

Did attempt to give the 5th OVA a shot yesterday, but tuned out of seeing it. At least from what I seen of the first episode before tuning out, it looked like the episode was continuing events from the 4th OVA series regarding spoiler[Kenshi being raised to be transported to Geminar to resolve its issues].

As others have commented, this OVA follows off of the 4th OVA series in that it is implementing characters and story elements from Kajishima's supplementary materials for the Tenchi franchise that are exclusive to Japan and make it a headache for non-Japanese fans to follow what is going on. And yes, this seems to be building up to spoiler[a harem resolution in the relationships with Tenchi and the girls] that doesn't seem to be everyone's cup of tea, as I've at least read up on some of Kajishima's doujin that dabble into this. I've pretty much given up on caring for the more recent installments of the Tenchi franchise at this point. Not so much for the mentioned developments in Kajishima's doujin, but more for the lack of easy accessibility to all the supplemental materials that Japanese fans have access to which the recent OVAs dabble into. Would be less frustrating if Kajishima adapted the supplemental material to anime form, but I hear he's reluctant to even do that as he doesn't want to be repetitive with creating his source material.

Silly me, did not see the years part, I thought it meant until this coming May/June. I guess I will be in for a long wait, unless I go for the halfway point in August.

The problem with Tenchi Muyo nowadays is that it's just deadly dull.

It's just a bunch of characters sitting down and talking and talking all the while Kajishima projects on us his fantasies of an uber powerful aristocratic space clan. You'd think the adventures of an uber powerful aristocratic space clan should be exciting by default, but he manages to make them boring by now. The characters are so powerful there's nothing that can challenge them physically, and there are no emotional or moral conflicts to make up for it.

Nothing about actual space politics, games of intrigue beyond 'Seto orders people to follow her whims and they comply because she's Seto and that's it', no moral ruminations on whether it's correct to keep mankind from all the advances the other races in the universe have achieved or if they're in the right for doing that to mankind just because they consider themselves superior. It's clear Kajishima has a very romanticized Might Makes Right view of aristocracy as being entitled to do what they want, but that only adds to the bore because the main characters never challenge the status quo or do anything interesting with it.

Then, despite the cast being so powerful and resourceful they could solve any situation without trying hard, they still plot to send Tenchi's brother away to an alien world with no support at a very young age, basically abandoning him to his own (plot) devices both physically and emotionally. We know he'll be fine because we've watched War on Geminar, but the characters themselves have no way of knowing this, yet they manipulate this boy's life from before his birth to do this when they're conceivably so powerful they could just bypass any rule in the setting and do the job themselves with no major losses. Nobody ever seems to think or point out this could be a, well, cruel and stupid thing to do to a child.

Again, it makes one lose a lot of the good will one had for these characters in the past, and since they have no conflicts to overcome anymore and they barely show up anymore with all the new faces yapping and talking around tables for most of the runtime, why should we care at all by this point?
