I haven't read the issues, only skimmed the beginning and end of this article to get the gist but avoided spoiling the details.

Any chance the adaptation could try to alter things? Probably not, almost assuredly not. But when skimming through the Crunchryroll behind the scenes feature (trying to skip through "this is how we trace and animate things" duh moments) I did see they skipped little things they felt were unnecessary (didn't adapt the story where Megumi realizes she loves Soma- because it's already obvious). Could the adaptation team look at the source and try to improve things? Give the villains better stories, further enhance the stuff that DID work? With their knowledge of the messy ending, better hint the possibility exists and give the villain some pause for his motives?

It's not impossible.

I was one of those fans who was extremely disappointed in the final arc of Shokugeki no Soma. To the point where I’m genuinely hoping the anime adaptation somehow fixes it.

I just have a lot of problems with how SnS ended. And I can probably write an essay on it all. Like how the other characters got completed shafted which made the manga less fun, or how it was building up to so many events but lacked any real pay off. But my real problem with it all...Is Erina.

I’m definitely on the minority on this, but I really don’t like Erika. I just don’t like her character archetype and I would’ve preferred it if her character development went down the simple route of “oh I kind of have a bad attitude, I’ll work to be better” instead of the “oh her dad was nuts, so feel bad for her.” But oh well, that’s manga. I can live with that. But then we do it AGAIN, but this time with her mom!?

Heck, at this point Alice is the only Nakiri worth anything. I just felt like the Nakiri family drama had taken over the final Arc, when we already did all of that with her father. And then it also turns out her Grandfather was the reason our cast of characters got into Tootsuki, because he wanted them to be good competition to “polish” Erina and save her from the God’s Tongue. What!?

By the time the manga ended, it was Shokugeki no Nakiri. Because the whole damn series was about Erina and her family apparently.

Also, minor note, but I also felt that the art of SnS went down in quality by the time the final arc came around. Now Shun Saeki (or tosh) is an AMAZING artist, and even if he was at his worst, it would still look great. But I still felt like he was cutting more corners near the end.

It’s most obvious with the character designs. Remember that in this arc, the characters are at least 1-2 years older. But somehow everyone, especially the boys, looks younger. Compare Kurokiba in his few appearances in the BLUE arc to how he looked in the Autumn Election Arc. Hell, even Souma looks a little like he regressed.

I admit story arc of "The Fourth Plate" left me kind of cold watching it compared to the earlier series, so now that I know what is in store with "The Fifth Plate", I am just going to not bother watching it.

I have never read the manga, but I was planning to watch season 5 of the anime even after learning that the story went downhill. However, this week I changed my mind and decided to end my Food Wars experience with season 4 of the anime.

This article further cements my decision.

Meh, still looking forward to watching Fifth Plate(once Sentai dubs it). And yes, I'm aware what people are saying about it(while try to remain spoiler-free as much as possible) but I don't care, I wanna see it for myself.

Me personally loves the series.. i just stopped watching in the third season because they started dubbing the show and i personally hate switching back and forth between Dub and Subs.. so i am just rewatching the show in dub and waiting for the rest to be dubbed.

Im surprised people only complain about the last arc. I dumped the flaming pile of garbage when it was from food competitions to Azami the psycho food fascist and his bunch of wannabe nazi lackeys.

They must really want to milk anything and everything they still can out of it.

I really want to thank you for taking the time to write this. I found it to be a good read.

I always planned to read the manga, but instead started the anime in August '19. I enjoyed the first and second seasons, but started to enjoy it less in the 3rd season when the vs Azami part started. The series then slowly became more of a generic shounen imo. I forget when I started reading about the terrible manga ending, I only knew how much people disliked it and the specific of Asahi's family. I normally avoid "big" spoilers like what's in this article, but it was nice reading a summary of what I'm about to get into.

I'll probably wait until it finishes airing to enjoy it all together Laughing

I don't really see the point of an article that could potencially push away viewers from season 5 or at least have them watching it with lack of objectivity. It would have been better to release this article after the end of the season.

And it's Le Dessert, not Desert.

Not sure how Naruto’s ending was all that bad. It certainly was far better than Bleach. And the sales numbers point to that.

But Thank You for columns in this format. TWIA is ok, but this makes for a much richer reading experience. TWIA is to loose and informal.

SAME! I remember it was exactly at this point where I started to lose interest and drop it soon after.

Ya know something is bad when you somehow unite the majority of the community into collectively admitting how terrible it got.

Like sure Naruto declined but it has its defenders while rarely see a genuine defender over the last arc of the Soma. Even the Azami stuff is at least controversial at best, on every site I’ve seen the last stuff is treated with a collective groan & depression over how terrible it was.

It’s gonna be fun when Toonami eventually gets to that point. I’m in a thread where me & some other manga-readers are hyping up how terrible it gets & the anime-only’s are just in total disbelief in that it can get so bad from such a good start.

I'm not sure what exactly had made me drop it, but I remember that I felt Azami's appearance in the story was already pushing things, so I'm surprised the author and artist had actually decided to push it even further.

Because as incredibly, incredibly flawed as the Azami arc was, it did have a number of genuinely good moments and honestly comes out looking like [expletive] shakespeare compared to the absolute bullshit that is the final arc. People give it less shit now because the following arc managed to be that much worse on literally every conceivable level

As an anime-only watcher I’ve been hearing for a while about how bad the final arc is, but not much about the specifics. Usually in these shounen manga final arcs, Bleach and Naruto come to mind, the problem is less with the quality of the story being told but with truly awful pacing especially since they come out weekly. My problems with those arcs are more than when I was reading it weekly enough of it felt like filler that I’d get annoyed. Being able to read them all at once really alleviated most of my issues with the endings of Naruto and Bleach, but it’s sounding here that this final arc has much more structural problems with its storytelling than just bad pacing. I’ll probably watch season five, but that’s mostly to see if it’s really as awful as the manga readers have been hyping it up to be. Part of me is hoping that it’s not that bad.

I know a lot of fans also didn’t much like the Azami arc, but I mostly enjoyed that arc. In fact, I’m still not sure why people hated that arc either. Sure it wasn’t as good as the Autumn Selections arc or the Training Camp arcs but I didn’t think it was bad. Sure the tone did get a bit darker for a bit and Azami’s plan strained my willful suspension of disbelief, but most of my problems with the Azami arc were more to do with the downgrade in animation quality, the rushed pacing in season 4 and the beginning of the graduation exams so I’m hoping that’ll be the case here. If not then I can just stop watching and pretend it ended with season 4. Also, does anyone know if this final arc is only going to be 13 episodes or if they’re going to do 24-26 episodes, cause if it’s only 13 and really is as bad as everyone says at least it will be short.
