"is becoming less of a laughing matter"

damn fuckin right. Honestly, if the kind of barking otaku that have been spewing for decades is culminating in actual mass murder nowadays, maybe it's time to shut down or slow the anime industry. Everything changed after KyoAni. It's a pretty scary prospect to be catering to sociopaths and would-be murderers at large under already grueling work conditions. People unappreciative or entitled enough to go *through* with death threats, as if saying such things over such petty matters isn't bad enough.

I feel like this is all building up to another massive tragedy.

""sites mudslinging against the industry" sounds like clickbait news sites and maybe Very Online Twitter people spreading bogus rumors or fearmongering like how anime fans are dangerous, or certain artists or series are sexist, or maybe its about accusations of bad workplace conditions. It sounds more like his complaint is about "fake news" and defamation than the threats itself.

i still love anime (certainly much more than the average person), but after several decades of reading about industry and consumer politics, you just realize the viewing community surrounding it and its similar subcultures is just an endless cesspool of hate and negative feelings. But you grow a thick skin and harden to things petty like words until the arson attack. Like for all the threats Anno received to be killed, he's still around. So KyoAni really was the culmination of everything forewarned by seniors in the industry.

The fears and complaints of this article are just another part of the grand problem, you see. The problem being that there seems to be so little love and unity (fans and industry) in the medium as a whole compared to the malice and hate.

Tatsuki is one of my favorite creators in the industry, absolutely no one deserves to be attacked like this but when it happens to someone you truly respect it really hits home. All I can say is I wish all the best for him and anyone dealing with such situations.

I've heard that the Kemono Friends 2 drama isn't quite over yet in Japan, but this is getting out of hand...

I thought that "aggregator sites" were websites linking to pirated material at file-sharing services, but what would that have to do with threats?

Despite what you may think, people who issue death threats or commit acts of violent atrocity are not the "norm" of anime fans. They aren't the norm of any group of people. Also the Hideaki Anno situation is not typical. Evangelion was a show with uniquely focused fan backlash (some would argue with good reason). Basically I'm saying the idea that a mass murder like the KyoAni arson was bound to happen eventually because anime fans are hateful psychopaths is ridiculous.

the violent atrocities bit, I'll agree with. It's true apart from individual stalker incidents, you have never seen an incident of KyoAni's magnitude. The petty death threats or jackass behavior though? Something I saw every other day of my life during my teen years of anime fandom interaction. I still see it every other week off this site. I mean, we anime fans all over are stereotyped as not-so-nice-people or "creepy" for a reason.

It's a very toxic consumerdom. There's no need to really deny that fact. It's just after KyoAni, things are no longer just brushed off as words. People in this industry are genuinely afraid for their lives.

I believe he’s more literally referring to the site as a aggregator of “Malicious”, like a fan sub aggregator website is a aggregator of pirated fan subs, or a news aggregator would be a website that links to various external news articles.

the TV industry that caters to otaku (violent kind included) has rather long stagnated. So maybe collectively lumping the whole industry was silly and I apologize for that. 1 out of 10+ seasonal TV anime on average estimate will be truly worthwhile for risks that might defy trends. Risks because you can't easily break the status quo to dissatisfy your unfortunate primary audience. Most of the exceptional anime have long poured straight out of its movie industry for a long time now in droves, KyoAni included.

That part of the industry which I assume is detached from television work ethics and standards to make such greatness is where I put all my faith in anime now. Apart from what SHAFT may sometimes be up to, anyways...

Shut down anime industry, of course not. What did the people working there do to deserve this? But anime fans were sending threats to voice actress of Ichigo from Darling in the Franxxx because they hated her character in waifu wars, so yes, the anime community can be quite a cesspool and it's nothing new. You must have lived under the rock if you think this is mudslinging against innocent and pure otakus.

Gamers are similar in that I remember developers geting hate mail for balancing characters in multiplayer games, or for patches that happened to cause issues with pirated versions of game. Because thieves have right to demand QA for their stolen goods. That one sounds similar to situation described in the article - thieves attacking those who make the actual goods they're using for free.

This did not actually happen. There was some backlash against the series producer but there was nothing targeting Ichinose Kana.

It's actually not about the link-sharing sites or piracy — he talks about the thing that is known as "matome sites", kind of collective news aggregator blogs that summarize the hot topics from boards, spreading gossips, rumors and do all kinds of yellow journalism to just get the ad-money, which was a strong thing in the past days (and was one of the causes of death of original 2ch) and still exists by now in Yaraon-based blogs and some other aggregators.

Basically - think of something like Sankaku, but way, way, WAY worse.

Definitely this. the 'matome' sites amplify and legitimatize extremists that typically would be ignored. The sites feeds on the gossips and artificial drama because they get the clicks and the extremists gets the joy of having their unpopular and often harmful opinions heard.
