Still better than the weird bisexual hentai adaptation of the 90s, but the last arcs were so surreal that it even took me a while to figure out what I was watching. I understand that many tropes were revolutionary at the time, but even now I feel too innocent for that.

I watched this streaming mostly because I was aware that it influenced things I liked, such as Steins;Gate, but in retrospect, it wasn't worth it. I suppose one thing that comes with watching more recent things and then this is that it makes the flaws more obvious. I think it might have benefited from some discretion in what aspects of the VN it focused on by cutting the romance stuff in favor of the overall plot since they had a finite amount of time to use. Then again, the remake of the VN came out around the same time, so maybe they were required to include that stuff to help sell the game.

It's hard to judge something like this anime in the year 2020.
While it is closer to the original game as an adaptation, especially compared to the incoherent hentai OVA version, they still took a few liberties along the way. Besides, the underlying material is both longer than what you could fit into a standard series and also representative of a very different genre and moment in time. Same basic reason why a lot of, say, films made back in the 1980s or 1990s wouldn't work today. That doesn't mean they weren't popular, important or influential. Just not perfectly suited for modern audiences, at least outside of those few viewers with a specific historical perspective or interest. |

I think this review is a bit harsh, especially on the art & animation. The animation could definitely have been better, but at least it’s not a slideshow (e.g., Ahiru no Sora) nor does it rely heavily on cgi (e.g., Arifureta). The art is suprisingly consistent, and characters are almost never off-model (which is unfortunately, becoming the norm in recent anime). At worst, the art and animation are a B-. Also, the review keeps mentioning how dated and unexciting some of the themes are now, but I have yet to see any other work that turns into an isekai two thirds into its run. The one thing I’m in agreement with the review is the critique on the story. The story was kind of a mess (an entertaining mess for me, nonetheless). Unfortunately, visual novels seem to be hard to translate to anime. I have never played any visual novels, but I know how long they can be, which I can imagine would be hard to adapt into a two cour anime. They probably should have emulated Rewrite and cut huge chunks from the story. However, I still enjoyed YU-NO regardless of its story problems, and it’s not nearly as bad as this review suggests.
