Awesome! Can't wait for more installments of this retrospective review series. Some discussion of the dub would be great too, since it was very well done, IMO.

Weren't the old classic reviews about watching something for the first time? Did the point of them change, or was just there nobody who hadn't watched Kill la Kill yet?

I don't find it too hard to imagine this show as an old classic, it sort of does look old. A lot of the character designs seem like updated versions of the ones you would see in an OVA with a high-school setting from the 80s.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Ryuko's conclusion there less "Satsuki killed my dad and I'mma get revenge against her" and more "Satsuki knows who killed my dad and I'm gonna beat that information out of her no matter how many goons she throws at me"? I think at some point, she may have considered on the possibility that Satsuki was the one behind it, but I don't think the show ever outright said "Ryuko thinks Satsuki killed her dad". And I still stand by the opinion that the first scene with Mako's family is my personal worst first impression of supporting characters in anime (until episode 4 of Fire Force came along). And apologies if it sounds like I'm just griping, Kill la Kill is great, it's just this is as good an opportunity as any to air these grievances out. |

That's a fair point, I probably should have more properly worded it as "Ryuko thinks Satsuki was involved in killing her dad" or "Ryuko thinks Satsuki knows who killed her dad"
It's kinda weird since I think Mako's delightful in her introductory scenes the first two episodes, and seeing her family certainly makes clear where she got her...Mako-ness from, but they're just nowhere near as charming. |

I'm a massive fan of Imaishi & Co's turn-everything-up-to-11 style, and Kill la Kill has it in spades. As you said, there's almost no time to breathe right out of the gate, with the ridiculous tracking shots and Massive Red Text showing up right in your face. The show's big and loud and over-the-top, the cast is terrific, the soundtrack is fantastic, the action is frenetic, and Mako Mankanshoku is one of the greatest characters ever devised. I should probably be rewatching it myself.

It's hard to imagine that Kill la Kill came out almost 7 years ago, I was in the middle of my first year in college when it premiered. I don't know how to explain this but the show still looks fresh and brand new to me, maybe it's because the animation and artstyle has a lot of personality. However, I haven't rewatched it since it ended (though I rewatched Gurren Lagann last year), I remember the first episode as setting the tone of the show very well, and I think it was a bit darker in tone compared to the rest of the series. Satsuki's and Ryuko's introductions were the highlights of the episode.
By the way, I didn't notice that there was a reference to B't X in the first episode until I saw someone pointing it out in a discussion, Ryuko's encounter with Senketsu is identical to how Teppei met X. As someone who watched Bt'X as a kid finding out that reference was awesome, I thought nobody remembered B't X. |

Quite franckly, Ryuko's outfit it's so over the top and extremely unsexy that I was never able to take it as fanservice, it was just too much for me to take it seriously in a fan service-way.

I literally just finished re-watching this show for the first time a few days ago (pretty much in anticipation for my Promare blu-ray to come in). Even having seen it previously, I forgot just how easy it was to marathon pretty much from start to finish. With such a fantastic, immediate hook and never really letting up off the gas pedal, it practically begs you to watch in multi-episode sittings at a time.

If I had one complaint about the show, it's that we only ever hear small sections of the song "Before my body is dry", you know, the "Don't loose your way ...". They should have used it at least once as ending theme.

Well, I’m certainly hoping the point hasn’t changed because this will be my first time watching. I did watch the first two episodes when it originally aired but dropped it. This time, I’m willing to stick around. Hope the reviews/comments will be light on spoilers, or I guess I’ll have to binge the show. I suppose that’s not the worst thing but . . . |

I'd say the OVA is essential viewing, especially for this sort of full series review. Please write your thoughts on it.
