Apparently offline viewing wasn’t offered with Crunchyroll Premium?

Although VRV is in the US only, its Premium service ($2 more with Hi Dive and other content) have offline viewing. I guess the new Crunchyroll tier options are more beneficial to those outside the US or those who purchase from the Crunchyroll Store?

Nah, no one is happy with these changes either in the USA or internationally. They are charge more for basically the same thing. Other streaming services offer offline and multi-devices as basics not a separate tier. With Crunchyroll keeping on removing series with no warning it especially affects the international fans who already have a much more limited catalogue than the USA side.

This is why I will pay for an annual sub versus a Monthly. They keep changing the prices in the MIDDLE of COVID. And in the middle of ATT trying to Hock CR for 1 Billion.

What pisses me off the most is you need a sub to read CR MANGA or you buy the chapters.

They're not? The standard tier is the same price as the current Premium subscription with the same access/service. What they've changed is to add 2 new tiers that offer more options at a higher price, almost identical to what Funimation did last year with their Premium Plus options.

I don’t need another tote bag. How about a tier that pays translators a living wage?

How much do Crunchyroll’s translators (or Japanese translators in general) get paid?

It seems similar to Hulu's platform, but even so, I don't find this enticing at all.

I don't travel enough to use offline downloads at the moment and I don't shop at Crunchyroll at all.

Professional translators make about 50,000 a year (so about 4,200 a month). CR translators only make about 80 bucks an episode (last I heard anyway).

Who would ever need to stream 4 or 6 shows concurrently? Unless you live in a massive family where everyone digs anime, I don't see the value in that feature. Although, I suppose if you got together with 4 or 6 anime loving friends, y'all could split the cost of a single membership...

I guess the plan is try and squeeze more blood from the viewers to justify their continued existence at WarnerMedia, particularly as the rumors of firings of asses and sales heat up.

Getting Crunchyroll through VRV still seems like the better value.

A couple replies to me on Twitter said that VRV isn't available in much of the world. Given Crunchyroll's substantial international presence, this is indeed the first chance a lot of people will get for offline viewing.

I don't blame Crunchyroll for trying but they really struggle to add value to the higher tier plans every time they try to reintroduce them. Some of the "perks" are are exclusive rights to paying them more money. That's not consumer value. In my opinion the only time they managed to provide value with an additional tier was when they launched their own Crunchyroll Manga but they didn't have the ability or will to expand the catalog out to the point where I feel it needed to be for me to pay extra for it.

I do wonder about that. I can't imagine a lot of families would have much need for it. Personally, the only time I've ever made use of a separate screen on a subscription was when my parents shared their Netflix subscription with me.

Conceivably, adding that many screens is meant to entice new into the service by encouraging them to share. I can't see a current subscriber getting value with that, but a group of friends might be willing to pool money for the fee if it works out cheaper than individual memberships. Considering the stories of CR being shopped around to buyers, as well as rumors of it being absorbed into HBO Max, it wouldn't surprise me if there is motivation to grow subscribers as fast as possible, even if it means getting one fee for six users.

Based on what is on offer, I'll stick with the regular one. I don't have any use for extra screens, I've used the offline viewing on other services maybe once a year, and the swag bag (assuming it's the same as before) is mostly stuff they would just give away at conventions. The discount on merch is about the only useful thing, but paying extra to occasionally get a discount isn't much of a bargain, especially if it doesn't stack so you're boxed into a use it or lose it scenario.
