Well that sucks. I was kind of hoping to buy and play Eternal Sonata. Does anyone know if the PS4 is backwards compatible with PS3 games?

The PS4 is not backwards-compatible. I think the early models of PS3 were the last to support the previous generation (PS2), and even then, it was buggy and incomplete.

Fortunately, the PS3 still uses HDMI, so it won't require extra hardware to connect to a modern TV.

PS3 is hard to emulate still (tho we're getting there). But ps1 and ps2 have near perfect emulation that runs on PC multitudes weaker than PS4. Sony could very legally use these projects to add emulation to the system. They simply refuse to do so

This is quite sad for people with a lot of old titles, but there is a bit of an explanation for this, besides all the PR talk.

While the XBOX has, for the most part, used a very similar architecture since its inception as a brand, thus enabling backwards compatibility fairly easily, the PlayStation family has a track record of switching technologies on each gen.

Still, it should be incredibly easy to make the PS5 backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 disc titles, they could even make them available through PSN without much issue, while allowing all of the improvements that emulators provide, such as increased internal resolutions, modern AA techniques, filters, and a long etc. If they don't, it's because they don't want to, not because they didn't have "time" or "resources".

Still, there is one console which would have been very hard to make backwards compatibility for, and that is the PS3, the investment they would've needed to make in order to allow the PS5 to play PS3 games would've been no joke, even if there are PS3 emulators, they aren't great yet, and require absurd amounts of GPU power to work, and even when they do, they're plagued with bugs right now for many of the games (though demon's souls can be played and works pretty well, with enhancements and other neat things). It's very possible all the talk about not having time, resources or whatever was referring to the PS3 compatibility and not the older gens.

Regardless, I'm pretty sad I can't just pop my older discs into the PS5, would that have been possible, I would've pre-ordered ASAP, now I'm simply going to wait for a "pro" or some limited edition of sorts before I get one.

Think this was pretty much a given as much as some people wished otherwise.

Is it basically confirmed at this point that PS5 will not support bluetooth headsets? I've seen that Sony confirmed most headsets that use a jack or USB will be fine, but can't find a clear answer regarding bluetooth.

It's stupid. PS3 I can understand for the time being. But there's absolutely no excuse for PS1-2.

If Sony can do multiple SKUs, then just add a more expensive one with the PS1-3 chips on board for another $100. Heck we already know PS1 is fully emulated, and PS2 has some emulation for digital titles. Even an imperfect solution is better than nothing.

Or let a third party sell an official BC software that receives regular updates through PSN. Tons of solutions, even monitizable ones, but Sony doesn't want to. We don't care about 4K native rendering or trophies. PS3 just did decent HD smoothing and upscaling. That is good enough.

To answer that question: No (and it was already announced even before the PS4 came out)

Back on topic, I'm not surprised that PS5 is not backward compatible with PS1, PS2, and PS3. If the PS4 is not backward compatible with PS3, then what make you think the PS5 will not work with PS3 games? Also regarding the PS2 and PS1 games, if your PS3 console is still active and working and has PS2 BC capable built in (like mine), then make sure you keep it and take care of it. That's all I can say. Thank goodness, the PS3 has HDMI.

As expected and I think a majority of buyers don't mind.

I understand the PS3 because of its weird architecture, but you can presumably emulate a PS1 or PS2 title on a toaster. I don't understand why they didn't even attempt it. I have a crapload of PS2 titles I'd love to play on something better than composite video.

While The "majority" of buyers might not care. That doesn't mean that majority is much bigger the minority. I think you are underestimating how many people enjoy playing older games.
They(sony) needs to compete with microsoft on this front. Not having some sort of backward compatilblity with a major libary available hinders your market share. My belief is that sony needs to compete and work this in.If they don't they are handing money to their competors. And they can not do that.

A damn shame they couldn't just bite the bullet & add that PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility to the PS5... but I guess that's how you see the Playstation NOW service, and incentivize publishers to keep doing HD re-releases :/

Happy to know PS4 titles are mostly supported though! Having skipped out on the PS4, it'll be nice to know if I ever get a PS5, I'll have my bases covered in that regard Razz

Backwards comparability is not emulation, it is using compatible hardware to the previews one. PS2 and PS1 are similar, and the PS3(early models) had the Emotion Engine chip. And I'm guessing that the PS4 and 5 have similar hardware which is why the system is backwards compatible with the PS4. Even if they do let you download and play PS1 and 2 games from the PSN, which I hope they do, they wouldn't be able to call it backwards comparability as it would be using an emulator.
