I'll watch it, but only because the first series was great. I am wondering why they felt a need to do a sequel. The meta in the original was wrapped up neatly.
Grasping for an equivalent the first thing to come to mind is Jewel of the Nile, the sequel to the Michael Douglas-Kathleen Turner hit Romancing the Stone. If you haven't seen it, RtS is a perfect mix of action, intrigue, romance, and comedy. Even the deus ex machina moments ("Write yourself out of this one, Joan Wilder.") are great. By comparison JotN was practically the archetype of the "unnecessary sequel". The plot was contrived, the resolution was weak, the action was cartoonish, and the chemistry the two principals had established in the first film was completely lacking. Even Danny DeVito, reprising his role from the first movie, looked lost. The "high point" is Douglas getting out of a jam by stealing an F-16, firing off the guns and missiles until everyone has fled, and then driving it out the gate on minimal throttle and 60 miles along the road without a single Egyptian Highway Patrolman pulling him over for not having brake lights. What made Toji no Miko so enjoyable for me was that it completely exceeded my expectations. Not sure what I was anticipating, maybe something like Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Girls without the hard ecchi content. Instead I was treated to an adventure which hit all the right buttons. Courage, honor, betrayal, an intractable foe that actually made sense according to the series concept, deep intrigue. It grabbed me from the opening episode and held fast until the conclusion. Of course, knowing that a sequel series is coming out I must go watch it again. I can only hope that the sequel is half as good as the first one. |
