For people who aren't already familiar with the franchise, this all means that this show could very well be a spoiler[sequel to], rather than a spoiler[remake of], the original visual novel and 2006 anime series.

I'm gonna feel like an idiot for asking this, but can someone maybe please give a brief summary on what this version of Higurashi is about and why it's relevant to the main series? I mean, I watched both the original Higurashi and it's sequel "Kai" many years ago, but I never really bothered with the different various OVA series they had come out afterwards. Honestly, this series was pretty trippy for me back then when I first watched it, so I'm just curious if it'll be worth it to watch this at all? Please and thank you! Very Happy

NOW this got my attention.

Maybe when I am done with this election and NBA playoffs I can have this, including Evangelion + Fate + Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition to hold me over for the winter till 2021 January.

The OP featuring spoiler[the Ushiromiya mansion and possibly Featherine] is what really threw me for a loop.

Err, that's the thing: it hasn't been confirmed yet what exactly this show is, and how it lines up with the rest of the franchise. It's supposably not a remake, but a sequel, but that's all we know so far.
I'd wait and see what happens. Whether a sequel or a remake, it still has to hold itself up on its own merits. Plus, it's good to wait and watch what people say about it.

Well, one of the most enduringly popular fan theories is that spoiler[Featherine and Hanyū are the same person], so maybe they're finally going to make that canon?

Having seen all of the animated projects so far up to this point, I'd personally highly recommend [minor? spoilers follow] spoiler[seeing the original series, Kai, and Rei before watching this if you're an anime-only watcher. There's a lot of interesting call backs, and some little scenes will mean a lot more to you if you've seen those prior iterations thus far (even just in EP2). The ED alone has a lot of spoilers for later content. I feel this was really meant more for existing fans, but is being sold as an entry point. ]

This interview FUNimation hosted with Ryukishi07 seems even more cheeky now after EP2:

This is very much in line with the Mystery aspect of the original novel & series - it's exciting to think no one has any idea of exactly what will happen next.

So not a remake but the Rebuild of Higurashi?

While I have it in my backlog I never got around to watching the original release, but would I be correct in presuming that it seems like it would still be good to watch it at some point before starting this series from what I'm gathering without getting in to spoilers?

Not really that either, if you've at least seen Higurashi S1 and Kai, spoiler[it's clear that this season is not retconning any of the previous content, and Rika even refers to the trials she had to endure for a hundred years (the events of the original anime adaptation). This is all speculation, but given the name of the series is GOU as of EP2, and is translated as "the true nature of everything", I don't think we're going to find an answer to your question until later in this season's run. This certainly doesn't seem to be a FMA: Brotherhood or Rebuild of Evangelion scenario. ] [/spoiler]

[All spoiler free recommendations.]

I'd say it's up to how much time you have, but if it were up to me, I'd recommend at least Higurashi (2006) and Kai (2007) at the very least - and the Rei OVA (2009) if you'd like:
anime#6134
anime#7454
anime#9199

Based on this interview with the original author, you could start with the 2020 version if you want though:

I was going to give this a go to see if I liked the update any better, but if I have to revisit the previous parts of the franchise to get anything out of this, it sounds like I should just skip the whole thing. Glad to know this early on, since I have too much stuff I'd rather watch anyway. Smile

To be fair, they said they wanted this to appeal to both new and old fans alike. So while it's clear this is tying deeper in to the existing series narrative than previously thought, it will likely still function just fine as a standalone production.

Simple rule: If it's Higurashi, it's complicated. This does answer some questions I had about episode 1 so... ok.

I would rather say that this is Higurashi ALTERNATIVE! If you know what I mean. Laughing
