What about Extra and Unlimited, though? I’d like to know if they’re ever going to get adapted into anime.

This should not be a tv anime series but an OVA series due to possible higher production values and the animators having more time to actually animate. What a disappointment and miss opportunity. Now i have to expect at worst this to be another average looking seasonal anime show, muv luv deserves better.

Theres no way they could have finished a 50+ hour VN in a few OVA episodes. If anything, 18+ VNs that only get a few OVAs tend to just be hentai because thats all you can really fit into that amount of time.

Nice, i was expecting an ova but a tv serie is much better, let's hope the original Muv-Luv will finally get one too after Alternative it's already the 3rd spin-off which get an animation before the main game.

I don't know if this is going to work. Alternative is heavily reliant on what came before to even work (spoiler[See all the callbacks and direct influence on Extra itself.]) Unless they have this incredibly tightly written, I just don't see it working. That being said, I am curious to see if they nail Takeru's characterization because that's probably the most important point they need to do without the Extra or Unlimited adaptions.

spoiler[I'm expecting CHOMP to be horribly executed given they're going with CG for the BETA as well.]

PTSD arc's probably going to be an interesting challenge though.

The article may want to mention that Sentai released the Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse anime on disc in 2015.

If the plan to animate the entire thing and it's anything shorter than 50 eps it will be a disaster. Never forget the MLA VN is about as long as all 3 F/SN routes combined.

And as other people said this will be confusing as hell for anyone who hasn't read extra or unlimited first (even tho they're nowhere near as good)

That would make sense if it was hand-drawn, allowing the animators more time. But they are using CG Mechs, so all the animators have to work on are the characters.

I was thinking about Total Eclipse when I read the article since there weren't any mentions of Extra and Unlimited. Then I doubled back and realize just how big of news this is.

Really hope they nail the series composition, since this is gonna be reaaally tricky.

it can totally work just look at legend of the galactic heroes's 110 episode count and that's an ova series. it doesn't have to be a few episodes it can be as many as they need and with less time constraints as opposed with a tv anime with 12 or 26 episodes (26 if we're lucky now days) But japan doesn't seem to want to do a large scale OVA's anymore unless its gundam. (even tho they are not 110 eps it still counts for something).

Honestly i would prefer an netflix original over this possibly cheap tv anime adaption because at least the more explicit content in the story won't be diluted or censored. Also i wish this had full hand drawn animation for the design for the mechs, i mean this series deserves a more ambiguous production behind it in general.
its a shame the quick & efficient maybe even cheap route is what we are getting for the first muv luv just to reach a wider audience.
Its a shame the quality of this work will suffer for it, its proof the anime production committees don't want to take risk's when it comes to anime now.
A Crying damn shame.

LotGH is an exception among exceptions in anime history, and won't ever happen again. You will never ever find an OVA series as long as it, the context of that production is something completely unprecedented to this day and heavily dependent of how it was supported back in the time of the original release.
