I didn't think Toei would actually try something like what you just described here. Usually they milk their products for all they're worth without really trying to do anything new with them. Which also makes me wonder if this movie will ever get some kind of Blu-Ray release, or even an English dub. The first season of Doremi did air in America, albeit heavily altered and censored, and I'm sure a lot of the voice actors for that aren't even working anymore, with some exceptions. I can probably see GKids or Eleven Arts nabbing this, but who knows at this point?

Also, Anime News Network, why in the world are you calling this by the english dub title?
Just...just call it how it was intended to be called; Ojamajo Doremi. You've been referring to the dub title, even for this movie FOR MONTHS. It's not even owned by 4Kids anymore, so why keep on calling it that. Sure, Latinamerica also calls this Magical Doremi, but they didn't even change the characters names in that. |

I can only assume it's just easier to say than Ojamajo Doremi, especially since most people who even know of the series in America knew it from the original 4Kids broadcast, me being one of those kids from back then. Besides, Magical Doremi rolls off the tongue easier than, say, Bothersome Witch Doremi (literal English translation of the Japanese title).

The official Japanese title of the film is "Majo Minarai o Sagashite"—literally "Looking for Witch Apprentices." It doesn't include the "Doremi" name at all. "Looking for Magical DoReMi" is the official English title used in Japanese materials, so it's coming from the studio.
I can't tell you how happy this review makes me—it's exactly the movie I had hoped for. The story of the series is over and it doesn't need a continuation, but the whole show is rife with themes of memory: how it can both entrap us and provide the fuel we need to propel ourselves forward. The film is taking the ideas we watched the original cast exploring for over 200 episodes and applying them to ourselves, the viewers, at a time when the show has become a memory. It's so gloriously metatextual and yet so wholly sincere at the same time. That said, if you haven't seen the original, for the love of all that you hold holy watch it. It is an unspeakably great show that will literally make you laugh, cry, and become a better person. |

Now, while I can't speak for any of the other writers here on ANN, the reason I called it "Looking for Magical Doremi" is because that was the official English title used at the film festival by both promotional materials and in the interview event that took place after the screening. |

And also incomplete like Mew Mew and this is not even counting the sequel seasons.
Toei being Toei, it's basically like Maho Girls PreCure as "Witchy Pretty Cure", the latter name having resurfaced recently thanks to France getting the streaming license. |

I was hoping this would be an actual Doremi movie instead of a slice of movie where Doremi exists only as a fictional TV show. Especially as there are sequel light novels about the girls in high school so there's plenty of material they could have worked with. The movie does still sound interesting but it's not what I was expecting when they announced a Doremi anniversary sequel. But it does sound like it's still somewhat keeping in line with the themes of the series.

I hope this movie get released overseas. It seems a different take on nostalgia than the "here you have exactly what you liked 20 years ago!" from other franchises and I appreciate that.
Also, "Magical DoReMi" is/was the official name of the series overseas, not just in the U.S. of A. |

The premise of the movie is beyond fascinating. As someone who's both at a critical point in his life and sick and tired of nostalgic cash-grabs, this movie seems to be made for me.

I very much want to see this. This sounds far more interesting than just a new movie in the style of the old show.
I love Doremi, and going in a completely new direction like this sounds fascinating. |
